That which is manifest, perfectly enlightened, is so named 'conditioned' in order to manifestly, perfectly awaken to that inexpressible dharma nature. Son of lineage, that which is called 'unconditioned' is also the word established by the teacher, which is speech arising from conceptualization. Whatever speech arises from conceptualization is speech of various conceptualizations, and because it is not completely established, it is unconditioned. Son of lineage, that which is called 'conditioned' also belongs to the category of speech, and however one understands conditioned and unconditioned, that also becomes the same as it. That also becomes the same as it. Speech is also not without substance, and what is that substance? It is that which the noble ones, with noble wisdom and noble vision, manifestly, perfectly awaken to inexpressibly, and in order to manifestly, perfectly realize that inexpressible dharma nature, it is named 'unconditioned.' O son of the conquerors, how is it that the substance of the noble ones, with noble wisdom and noble vision, manifestly, perfectly awakens to inexpressibly, and in order to manifestly, perfectly realize that inexpressible dharma nature, it is named 'conditioned' and 'unconditioned'? Son of lineage, for example, a magician or a clever student of a magician sits at a crossroads on a great road, gathers together grass, leaves, trees, pebbles, or many tiles, and then displays various kinds of magic, such as a multitude of elephants, a multitude of horses, a multitude of chariots, a multitude of small armies, and a collection of jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, agate, and coral, as well as collections of wealth, grain, storehouses, and granaries. If these are displayed, then those sentient beings who are childish in nature, foolish in nature, and whose wisdom is disordered, who do not recognize the grass, leaves, trees, pebbles, and tiles, when they see or hear these things, think to themselves: 'What is the appearance of the multitude of elephants?'

This exists. The assembly of cavalry, the assembly of chariots, the assembly of small troops, jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, coral, the assembly of coral, wealth, grain, storehouses, and granaries—whatever appears, they think, "This exists." They firmly grasp and cling to these things as they are seen and heard, and they also follow by naming them, saying, "This is true, and the other is false." These are things that need to be carefully examined later. Those sentient beings who are not of childish nature, not of ignorant nature, but of wise nature, when they see or hear grass and leaves, trees and fragments, rubble, etc., think this: "The appearance of an elephant assembly does not exist. The assembly of cavalry, the assembly of chariots, the assembly of small troops, jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, coral, the assembly of coral, wealth, grain, storehouses, and granaries—whatever appears, does not exist. But the illusion in which the perception of an elephant assembly and the perception of the names of an elephant assembly arise, and the perception between wealth, grain, storehouses, and the assembly of granaries, and the perception of the names of those, this exists. The thing that deceives the eye, this exists," they think. They firmly grasp and cling to these things as they are seen and heard, and they do not follow by naming them, saying, "This is true, and the other is false." Instead, they follow by naming in order to discern the aspects of things in this way, and these are things that do not need to be carefully examined later. Similarly, those sentient beings who are of childish nature, who have become ordinary beings, who have not attained the transcendent wisdom, who do not understand the inexpressible nature of all phenomena, when they see or hear conditioned and unconditioned things, they think this: "Whatever appears as conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, this exists," they think.
