It should be known that it can be attained up to perfect enlightenment. It should be known that the bonds of characteristics and bad states are of fourteen kinds, namely: the bond of the senses, the bond of objects, the bond of sentient beings clinging to each other, the bond of place, the bond of knowing and not knowing, the bond of knowable and unknowable, and also the bond of craving for arising, the bond of craving for destruction, the incompatible cause, the bond of manifest attachment to no cause, the bond of manifest pride in attainment, the bond of manifest attachment to the nature of complete imputation, the bond of manifest attachment to the nature of the person, the bond of manifest pride in the complete knowledge of the person, and the bond of manifest pride in the complete knowledge of the Dharma. Here, the place is this: that is, the vessel world, because the senses arise in dependence on it. Relying on emptiness, a Bodhisattva who strives to meditate on mindfulness, in short, should liberate the mind from the six kinds of bonds of perception. What are the six kinds of bonds of perception? That is, between the body and the dharmas, whatever is the inner perception is the first bond of perception. Whatever is the outer perception of those very things is the second. Whatever is the inner and outer perception of those very things is the third. Whatever is the perception of meditating on mindfulness after making aspirations to liberate those countless and immeasurable realms of sentient beings in the ten directions is the fourth. Whatever is the perception of abiding while observing the body and so on of someone is the fifth. Whatever is the perception of abiding while truly observing those very bodies and so on is the sixth bond of perception. In this regard, it should be known that there are eleven kinds of bonds of perception above observation. What are the eleven kinds of bonds of perception above observation? That is, whatever is the defilement and the pure truth of abiding while observing the body and so on as the body and so on is considered the supreme meaning

That is the first. To perceive that the supreme meaning of all afflictions has been done is the second. To perceive that the supreme meaning of complete purification has not been done is the third. To perceive that the supreme meaning of what has not been done is permanent is the fourth. To perceive that afflictions that have been done are constantly engaged in is the fifth. To perceive that permanence itself is unchanging is the sixth. To perceive that constant engagement itself is accompanied by suffering and change, and is of the nature of suffering, is the seventh. To perceive that itself, through birth, destruction, dwelling, and alteration, with its own characteristics, accompanied by change, is its own characteristic, is the eighth. To perceive that all afflicted and purified dharmas are contained in the supreme meaning of what is unchanging and accompanied by change is the ninth. To perceive that all afflicted and purified dharmas are without the nature of affliction and purification is the tenth. To perceive that all afflicted and purified dharmas themselves are of the nature of selflessness is the eleventh. Thus, knowing and seeing these aspects of the bondage of perception from higher to higher, therefore, the Bodhisattva, relying on emptiness, cultivates the mindfulnesses and also liberates the mind. Having been liberated from the bondage of perception, one will also be liberated from all bondages of perception. Some Mahayana practitioners, holding their own views, say that in conventional truth everything exists, but in ultimate truth everything does not exist. To them, one should say: Venerable one, what is ultimate truth? What is conventional truth? If they answer thus: The selflessness of all dharmas is ultimate truth, and to fixate on selflessness as having self-nature is conventional truth.

Why is that? Because in this way, one conventionally makes, imputes, expresses, and designates things that do not exist. If one answers in this way, then one should say to him: Do you think that what is apprehended as self-nature arises from the cause of expression and convention? Or do you think it is merely expression and convention? If it arises from the cause of expression and convention, then since it arises from the cause of expression and convention, it cannot be said to be 'non-existent.' If it is merely expression and convention, then one cannot express and conventionally make it without a basis. To this, one should also say to the venerable one: Why is it that what is apprehended is non-existent? Having asked this, if he answers, 'Because it is a reversed object,' then one should say to him: Do you think that reversal exists, or do you think that it does not exist? If it exists, then it cannot be said that the selflessness of all phenomena is the ultimate truth. If it does not exist, then since it is a reversed object, it cannot be said that what is apprehended is without self-nature. The cause for thoroughly distinguishing the meaning of the sutras of the Great Vehicle is to be understood in five ways: The first is that it is taught for the sake of generating respect for the teacher. The second is that it is taught for the sake of properly gathering the retinue. The third is that it is taught for the sake of greatly increasing respect for the Dharma. The fourth is that it is taught for the sake of establishing things correctly. The fifth is that it is taught for the sake of extensively showing the meaning of just that. Starting from the complete examination of one's own characteristics and the complete examination of general characteristics, in order to obtain the unmixed qualities of the Buddha in the twelve sense fields, one should understand that there are ten kinds of non-perverted paths. Among them, in six ways, one completely examines one's own characteristics in the twelve sense fields, and in four ways, one completely examines the general characteristics.
