It is the earth, but not the gods. If it is because of no cause, then the absence of cause itself is the proper refuge, but not the gods. If it is because of worshipping the gods, then is the cause of the gods the worship itself, or the gods themselves, or both? If the worship itself is the cause, then any worship would make it into gods, so the gods themselves become meaningless. If the gods themselves are the cause, then even without worshipping the gods, the gods themselves would cause it to become gods. Therefore, worshipping the gods becomes meaningless. If both are the cause, then whatever the gods themselves, who are benefited by the worship, think will truly be accomplished. Therefore, the seven thoughts of those gods will only mistakenly believe that they can be truly accomplished, which is also unreasonable. These seven thoughts are: being benefited by the cause of worship, being benefited by the cause of faith, making those who do not believe believe, promising the particularly excellent gods themselves, truly accomplishing extremely excellent enjoyment, destroying the inharmonious side such as the Asuras, and mistakenly believing that thoughts about death and transmigration can be truly accomplished. There are four kinds of purity: purity of name, purity of speech, purity of essence, and purity of sign. Among them, the signs are power, cutting off doubts, prophecy, taming the difficult to tame,

Regarding the object of consciousness, things with names such as form, which exist with an inexpressible nature, it should be understood that it exists in the same way in both conventional and ultimate truths. To establish this well, the reasoning stated is as follows: It should be understood as explained in the Bodhisattva Grounds. Regarding this, what is the nature of the object of consciousness that relies on names, which is accustomed to expressions, the self-nature of the completely imputed? That is, it is not visible internally, nor is it visible externally, nor is it visible as non-existent in both. It is called unborn, unceasing, not transforming into birth, not ceasing, not transforming into cessation, peaceful from the beginning, and completely extinguished by its own nature. Like this, this is an imputed existence, because it is not an existence in the ultimate truth. What is the nature of the inexpressible self-nature? That is, it is born from the reversed and confused awareness produced by children, it is birth, it is cessation, it will also transform into birth, transform into cessation. Because it has not been abandoned and completely known, it is a distinction of affliction, and because it has been abandoned and completely known, it is a distinction of purification. Thirty-sixth Section There are four dharmas by which a Bodhisattva's extensive learning becomes correct retention, namely: the basis of extensive learning, the correct accomplishment of extensive learning, the fruit of extensive learning, and the purity of extensive learning. These are also, in order, the aspiration for enlightenment, reliance on a noble person, the power of individual examination, and dwelling in a solitary place. What is the realm of intention of the Bodhisattvas? It is said: It is the distinction made by believing that the Buddha's teachings have reality. What is the realm of higher intention of the Bodhisattvas? It is said: It is the distinction made by believing that the Buddha's teachings have qualities. What is the realm of aspiration of the Bodhisattvas? It is said: It is the distinction made by believing that the Buddha's teachings can be attained. Bodhisattva

What is their loving-kindness? It is said: The loving-kindness that one has for sentient beings who are in suffering. What is the compassion of the Bodhisattvas? It is said: The loving-kindness that one has for sentient beings who are in the cause of suffering. What is the wisdom of the Bodhisattvas? It is said: It is also the realization of how things truly exist in terms of what is knowable. What is the prajna of the Bodhisattvas? It is said: It is the realization of all that exists in terms of what is knowable. There are three faults of mind: clinging to the mind, the mind not abiding in its proper place, and wrong thoughts. How does a Bodhisattva give alms, and based on that almsgiving, how is it known that the alms are completely pure in seven ways? The object of giving is completely pure, the discipline is completely pure, the view is completely pure, the mind is completely pure, the speech is completely pure, the knowledge is completely pure, and the defilements are completely pure. All of these complete purities should be understood in ten ways. Among them, the ten ways in which the object of giving is completely pure are as follows: Giving extensively with many and various things; giving equally with neither too much nor too little; giving at the appropriate time when desired; giving abundantly with perfect color and so on; giving purely without mixing with impure things; giving lawfully with the characteristic of being without fault; giving according to the beggar's thoughts, as they wish; giving beneficially in a suitable way; giving all at once or gradually, considering the beggar's needs; and giving constantly without interruption. Among them, the ten ways in which discipline is completely pure are as follows: Giving the enjoyments obtained through the effort of practice; giving the portions that one has cultivated oneself; giving the things accumulated through roughness and defilement; with the Dharma,
