Because the Tathagata is unsparing in virtuous deeds and has very little craving. Praising and extolling the Tathagata has these two amazing and wonderful qualities: first, the one who praises benefits only himself, and when constantly practiced, immeasurable merit will arise; second, the Tathagata is free from all desires, yet he can benefit others. Therefore, how one praises the Tathagata, so one can accomplish one's own benefit; how one accomplishes one's own benefit, so one can benefit the Tathagata with offerings. Therefore, the merit possessing these two characteristics will produce extremely vast and inexhaustible results, that is, the Tathagata possesses the characteristic of desire and the characteristic of non-desire. The qualities of the Tathagata can be summarized into six aspects: all-encompassing, immaculate, immovable, unequal, the work of benefiting sentient beings, and power. Then, how to understand "all-encompassing"? Because the Tathagata possesses all the worldly and transcendental qualities that exist in the three realms. Moreover, these transcendental qualities also completely transcend the realm of speech. Therefore, since the Tathagata completely transcends all praise, he is the only one worthy of praise. Then, how to understand "immaculate"? The defilements of qualities are these seven: desire, wrong views, doubt, pride, arrogance, latent tendencies, and stinginess. The Tathagata does not possess these defilements in any way. For example, the Tathagata does not rejoice when others know that he possesses qualities, does not seek benefits from others for the sake of qualities, does not cling to qualities, does not doubt whether these qualities are good or bad, and does not elevate himself above others because of these qualities.

They do not measure, and when observing their own merits, they do not generate pride, frivolity, joy, or mental ease. Because they have completely destroyed all defilements with their habitual tendencies, they do not possess latent defilements. Because they do not have the extremely clinging thought that "it would be bad if others realized these merits." How are they unwavering? The inexhaustible qualities of the Tathāgatas cannot be moved by non-Buddhists, cannot be moved by demons, cannot be stolen by thieves, cannot be moved by relatives, cannot be moved by kings, cannot be moved by the great elements, water, fire, and wind, and will not completely decline due to the exhaustion of life. Therefore, these qualities of the Tathāgatas are inexhaustible. Thus, these are unwavering. How are they unequal? With various excellent and vast powers, they are unequal to sentient beings who are pure and impure. Therefore, these are unequal. How are they workers for the benefit of sentient beings? Having abandoned the vast and faultless bliss, in order to correctly show the actions that benefit others. Therefore, these are workers for the benefit of sentient beings. How is it power? Because the aspiration to benefit sentient beings has been perfectly accomplished, because they are completely surrounded by knowing the means to it, and because they are properly established in relation to it. The Tathāgatas are worthy of refuge, but the gods are not worthy of refuge, which can be understood by five reasons. What are the five? Namely, from signs, nature, actions, dharma, cause, and effect. Among them, how to recognize it from the signs? Because the gods are invisible, they cannot be universally named; because they have fierce adornments, they are accompanied by fear; because they rely on carelessness, they are accompanied by desire; because they do not consider the benefit of others, they have no compassion; because they do not know what has been done and what has not been done, and do not understand its true meaning.

Therefore. If one wants to know how the Tathagata is worthy of protection from the signs, it is because from the appearance, everything can be named, and because it has the appearance of extreme tranquility, it is free from fear, because it is cautious, it has no desire, because it observes the benefit of others, it has great compassion, because it knows what has been done and what has not been done, and understands the true meaning. Furthermore, it should be known that the Tathagata is the only one worthy of protection by five signs. What are the five? In order to benefit sentient beings, perfect and complete enlightenment is achieved, and because it is free from subsequent attachment and anger, and has no timidity, it follows the Dharma correctly and truthfully, and has an equal mind of benefiting sentient beings who benefit and harm, because it completely abandons attachment to palaces, consorts, princes and all enjoyments, and subdues the senses, and because it definitely explains the doubts of all sentient beings. How to say from the nature? Because the Tathagata is free from all defilements, he is also subdued himself, so he is also able to subdue others. Because the gods have defilements, they need to be subdued, and they are not capable of subduing others. How to say from the action? The Tathagata is the actor who abides in the vast samadhi, and is the actor who accomplishes the benefit of sentient beings, while the gods are the actors who abide in the enjoyment of desires, and are the actors who harm sentient beings in various ways. How to say from the Dharma? All worldly and transcendental perfections depend on one's own masculine action, so if there is no masculine action, then even those who have great respect for the gods cannot obtain it, but those who have masculine action can obtain it even without respect. How to say from cause and effect? Here, is becoming a god obtained by the karma of becoming a god, or by offering to him, or without cause? If by the karma of becoming a god, then one's own karma is the place of refuge.
