It is not permissible to fail to observe the following of different meanings individually. Thus, among those names that follow different meanings individually, which name follows the meaning of its own nature, and which name also follows the meaning between the nature of what is held? Does it thus follow the meaning of what exists, or does it follow the meaning of what does not exist? For the time being, it is not permissible to follow the meaning of what exists, and how it is not permissible, just as it has already been explained earlier when examining things. If it thus follows the meaning of what does not exist, then it will become following the meaning of no-nature. Whatever follows the meaning of no-nature, its meaning is not so existent, and to make it so manifest is also to impute. Whatever imputes and holds, that is phenomenal clinging. Therefore, how the name is, and how the expression is, just like that, it is fully established that one clings to phenomena as self-nature with respect to things. Furthermore, all children are bound by the expression of signs, therefore, how the name is, and how the expression is, just like that, one should observe that they cling to phenomena as self-nature with respect to things. Why should one recognize that they are bound by the expression of signs? It is said that it should be recognized by reason and scripture. What is reason? It is said that when there is no expression, joy in phenomena is not observed, and when there is expression, joy in it is not observed. That is one reason. Furthermore, because the place of birth of one is one, just as it is observed that expression arises in dependence on things, and it is also observed that things arise in dependence on expression. For example, if worldly people have things, they also thoroughly discern them with the expression of names, but they cannot completely discern what does not exist. Thus, it is observed that names and expressions arise in dependence on things. Just as, for example, when meditators meditate on their respective self-natures, how and how the mental activity of speaking in the mind is, so and so the knowable things and parts belonging to the mind stream.

Because concordant images arise in the manner of appearing, therefore, objects arising in dependence on expression are also objects of focus. Furthermore, the antidote to expression is that when the mind is closely applied to the realm of signlessness, all signs become invisible. A mind that is not closely applied is led by signs against its will. Therefore, by this method, it should also be understood that signs are bound by expression. What is the scripture? The Blessed One said: Children with deluded minds are bound by expressions of signs. Those liberated from the bonds of expression are the capable ones who have power over signs. The yogi who sees correctly abides thoroughly in correct knowledge. Neither is the essence perceived, nor is its place seen. That which is truly pure knowledge is therefore called true knowledge. That which is completely separated from the two graspings is therefore called non-duality. As it is said. For example, although ordinary people are skilled in the selflessness of the aggregates, they only regard the aggregates as merely belonging to the self. However, because the sleep of self has not been abandoned, strong clinging to self does not arise. Here too, it should be viewed in the same way. In summary: Collection and essence, as well as complete knowledge and intention, the object of practice, thought, and following, and the basis of difference is the last. The three essences, the cause, the name, and the discriminations, etc., among these five dharmas, the first essence, how many of these five dharmas are collected by it? Answer: None are collected. How many are collected by the second essence? Answer: Four are collected. How many are collected by the third essence? Answer: One is collected. If it is said that the dependent nature is also collected by true wisdom, then will the dependent nature be known by relying on clinging to the completely imputed nature? How should this be answered? Answer: There, what is contemplated is the dependent nature that leads to all afflictions, not the one that leads to complete purification. The dependent nature that leads to complete purification is not clinging to it.
