Or those who have become loving, sorrow and so on arise from transformation or change. Why are the five obscurations called the sound of a turtle? Answer: Because they are in accordance with the Dharma in that there are five branches of the opposing side of meditating on yoga. Why is anger called the sound of sin? Answer: Because, considering unpleasantness and unbearable words, it is similar in nature to the opposing side of obtaining instruction and following instruction. Why are jealousy and stinginess called the sound of nine kinds of meat? Answer: Because it is the very act of universally enjoying the place of gain and honor that is the opposing side of the Dharma that truly brings joy. Why are desires called the sound of gazelle meat? Answer: Because the virtues are always cultivated, and they are not completely accomplished in connection with the master of the opposing side. Why is ignorance called the sound of a long-tailed monkey? Answer: Because the opposing side of the knowledge arising from hearing is similar to it in nature. Why is doubt called the sound of a rock at a crossroads? Answer: Because the opposing side of the knowledge arising from thinking is similar to it in nature. Why is the pride of "I am" called the sound of the environment? Answer: Because the opposing side of the knowledge arising from meditation is similar to it in nature. Since there are other afflictions that cause misconduct, why are attachment, hatred, and delusion singled out and designated as the root of non-virtue? Answer: In short, because there are three kinds of causes of karma: the cause of material possessions, the cause of harming others, and the cause of clinging to the distinction of wrong teachings. For these causes, attachment and so on are connected to whatever clings to them accordingly. Intermediate summary: Separated from desire, craving, and attachment, ego-grasping and so on are the same, intention and turtle and so on, and it.

Greed and so on are others. Among the ten afflictions such as greed, which ones cause karma to arise? Which ones do not? Answer: All of them cause karma to arise, but the karma that leads to the lower realms is caused by the afflictions of intense habituation, not by the habituation of forgetfulness, conceptual imputation, or inherent nature. If one were to describe the characteristics of afflictions, the answer is: In brief, there are three characteristics: self-characteristic, general characteristic, and specific characteristic. Among these, the self-characteristic is to be regarded as belonging to the individual essence of greed and so on. The general characteristic is that without distinction, all are the characteristic of non-peacefulness. The specific characteristic is as follows: the specific characteristic of nomenclature and the specific characteristic of entering. The specific characteristic of nomenclature is as follows: as taught in the "Ground of Objects," such as connections, bonds, latent tendencies, near afflictions, and complete entanglements. The specific characteristic of entering is as follows: one should observe from the entering of latent tendencies, the entering of objects, the entering of complete arising, the entering of completely differentiated aspects, the entering of strength and non-strength, the entering of cause and effect, and the entering of wrong views. The characteristic of the entering of latent tendencies, in brief, is to be understood in eighteen ways, namely: the latent tendency that follows its own object, the one that follows another, the one that has declined and the one that has not declined, the latent tendency and the non-latent tendency, the complete and the incomplete, the one that can be truly destroyed and the one that cannot be truly destroyed, the superior and the equal, the weak and the awakened, the unawakened, the one that generates much suffering, the one that generates little suffering, and the one that does not generate suffering. Among these, the one that follows its own object is the one that belongs to itself in the three realms.
