The fault of arising from all aspects, the fault of affliction, is caused by the desire of affliction. For example, if someone does not fully understand and abandon the attachment of universal conceptualization, then initially they will be completely burned by the thirst for desire, and being completely burned by the thirst for desire, they will completely seek desire, and by completely seeking desire, they will experience the suffering of complete exhaustion of body and mind. If the effort is not successful, they will experience the suffering of exhaustion and fruitlessness, saying, "Alas, my effort is fruitless!" Even if it is successful, they will strive greatly for the sake of universally guarding it, and thus experience the suffering of universally guarding it. Even at the time of fully enjoying it, they will be completely burned by the fire of desire and experience the suffering of inner unrest. When it declines, they will also experience the suffering of sorrow. When remembering it, they will also experience the suffering of conceptualization. Therefore, because of this cause, it is like initiating the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. Having completely abandoned desires and renounced, even after completely abandoning desires, they will still take the basis of afflicted desires. Merely because of the basis of afflicted desires, birth, aging, sickness, death, and so on will arise in the realm of desire, and the suffering of the lower realms will be manifestly accomplished. Thus, those similar to this are the faults of affliction, because the cause of these faults is the desire of affliction. Therefore, the Bhagavan completely revealed only the desire of affliction with the word "desire," and not the desire for objects. How many kinds of conceptualizations are there that generate the attachment of desire? It is said that there are eight kinds, namely: preventing, awakening, universally joining, grasping at characteristics, clinging, separately desiring, certainly harming, and extremely clinging. This was asked by Brahma.

In the Vinaya Sutra, it says: "Turning back and awakening, likewise, completely combining and grasping at characteristics, attachment and various desires, definitely harming, likewise, supremely attaching, are what give rise to desire's attachment, called 'pervasive discrimination,' the wise should completely abandon these." Just as it is said. Among these, turning back means turning back from the mindstream that is diligent in virtue, and generating effort towards desires. Among these, awakening means that for an object that has not yet approached and has not yet manifested, it is completely bound by being completely entangled by the attachment of desire. Among these, completely combining means that by whatever desire's attachment completely entangles, one completely seeks desires. Among these, grasping at characteristics means that by whatever one grasps at the characteristics of an object that has approached and manifested, and grasps at the characteristics of manifestation. Among these, attachment means that for an object that has approached and manifested, it is completely bound by being completely entangled by the attachment of desire. Among these, various desires means that by whatever such attachment completely entangles, one manifestly desires various enjoyments of desire. Among these, definitely harming means that by whatever, when repeatedly manifesting and accomplishing desires, one definitely sees only virtues and does not see faults, and completely enjoys them. Among these, supremely attaching means that by being completely entangled by the attachment of desire, it is completely bound by ultimate and complete. Why, in desire, is only attachment completely shown as the nature of desire among all the afflictions of conduct? The answer is: By whatever cause only craving is completely shown as the nature of the truth of the origin of suffering, this should also be examined by the same cause. Why is attachment associated with pervasive discrimination completely shown as the nature of desire? The answer is: The cause of attachment manifesting and the cause of attachment completely arising, and the cause of completely enjoying the desire for things, gathering these together is pervasive discrimination.
