A Summary of the Ascertainment of the Grounds of Yogic Practice. Asanga. A Summary of the Ascertainment of the Grounds of Yogic Practice. Asanga. A Summary of the Ascertainment of the Grounds of Yogic Practice. Volume One. Homage to the Lord of Speech, Manjushri, the Youthful, and to the Noble Maitreya. The grounds have been explained. From here on, the skillfulness in ascertaining those grounds themselves will be discussed. Relying on the skillfulness in ascertainment, one will become skilled in answering all questions. The ascertainment of the ground of mind and that which is associated with the five aggregates of consciousness is what is spoken of as the seed-place, the alaya-consciousness. Its existence and distinctions have not been shown. Why have they not been shown, and how should one know its existence and distinctions? It is because the Bhagavan has taught it secretly and it is a designation. Therefore, it has not been shown. As the Bhagavan said: The taking-consciousness is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river, it is not proper to conceive of it as self, therefore I have not shown it to children. So it is said. Summary: Taking and first clear, seed action and body feeling, mindless absorption and, likewise, death transference cannot change. The existence of alaya-consciousness should be understood in eight ways: that is, if there were no alaya-consciousness, there would be no possibility of taking a place, no possibility of first arising, no possibility of clear arising, no possibility of the seed itself, no possibility of action, no possibility of bodily feeling, no possibility of mindless absorption, and no possibility of the death transference of consciousness. Why is it not possible to take a place? Answer: There are five causes, that is, the alaya-consciousness arises from the cause of previously accumulated actions, while the consciousnesses that arise, such as the eye, arise from the cause of the conditions that arise in the present. As it is extensively taught, the consciousnesses arise due to the power of the senses, objects, and attention.

E is the first cause. Furthermore, The collection of the six consciousnesses appears as virtuous and non-virtuous, which is the second cause. Furthermore, for the collection of the six consciousnesses, what is not indicated, the kind included in the maturation of the unspecified, is not visible, which is the third cause. Furthermore, the collection of the six consciousnesses arises from a definite place, so the consciousness arises from whatever place, it is grasped by that place itself, and the remaining ones cannot grasp it, so it is not possible. It is also not possible to grasp because it is separated from consciousness, which is the fourth cause. Furthermore, it will fall into the fault of taking places again and again, such as the eye consciousness sometimes arises and sometimes does not arise, and the rest are the same, which is the fifth cause. Thus, it is not possible because it arises from the cause of previous actions and present conditions, and it is virtuous and non-virtuous, and that kind is invisible, and the place is definite, and it will fall into the fault of taking and abandoning again and again. Why is it not possible to enter and arise initially? If someone says this: If there is Alaya consciousness, then two consciousnesses will arise simultaneously. To this question, it should be answered like this: This is only your own misunderstanding, but there is actually no fault, because consciousness will only arise simultaneously. Why? For example, someone wants to watch and recognize simultaneously, but any consciousness cannot enter first, because for it, there is no difference between attention, sense organs, and objects. Why do consciousnesses not arise simultaneously? Why is it not clear that mental consciousness arises simultaneously and subsequently with eye consciousness and so on? For example, when recalling the object experienced in the past, Then the entry of mental consciousness is not clear, but for the object that is happening now, the entry of mental consciousness is not unclear, therefore, simultaneous arising or mental

English

It is reasonable that consciousness is not manifest. Why is it impossible for the six aggregates of consciousness to be the very nature of one seed? Because unwholesome follows wholesome, wholesome follows unwholesome, indeterminate follows both, an inferior realm follows an evil realm, a middling realm follows an inferior realm, and likewise, an evil realm follows a superior realm, the contaminated follows the uncontaminated, the uncontaminated follows the contaminated, the mundane follows the supramundane, and the mundane mind arises after the supramundane, because those cannot now become the very nature of a seed. Even if the mind's continuum is interrupted for a long time, it will arise after a long time, therefore it is also impossible. Why is it that if consciousness does not arise simultaneously, karma cannot exist? Because karma is generally fourfold: the consciousness of the vessel, the consciousness of the place, the consciousness of thinking "I," and the consciousness of the object. Thus, all those consciousnesses appear to arise simultaneously in an instant, but it is impossible for such extremely different karmas to exist in a single instant of a single consciousness. Why is it that if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, bodily feeling cannot exist? Because whether one attends properly or improperly, subsequently cognizes, or the mind enters into samādhi, or the mind does not enter into samādhi, the various, manifold, and diverse feelings that arise in one body, it seems unreasonable to think that those cannot arise. Therefore, ālaya-vijñāna exists. Why is it that if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, the samāpatti of non-mentation cannot exist? Because the consciousness that enters into the cessation of perception, or enters into the cessation, will only be separated from the body, and will not be unseparated. Therefore, if it becomes merely death, the Blessed One once said: 'His consciousness is not separated from the body.'
