If produced formations do not arise from what exists, then why do things like sky flowers, barren women's sons, and rabbit horns not arise? This is because those things do not have a cause for arising, while all formations have their own definite causes for arising. If all formations have their own definite causes for arising, then why do all formations not arise simultaneously and together? Formations, although having causes, arise in dependence on conditions for arising. Whichever formation's condition for arising is near, the cause of that formation makes that formation manifest. Therefore, although formations have causes, they do not arise simultaneously and together. So, what is the cause of formations, and what is the condition? The Blessed One said that the conditions for the arising of formations are these four: causal condition, immediate condition, objective condition, and dominant condition. Among these, the causal condition is both a cause and a condition. The other three conditions are only conditions and not causes. So, what is the causal condition? Whatever is a sense faculty with form and its basis, and whatever is consciousness, these two are called, in brief, the all-seeds. Having a sense faculty with form is the seed of those sense faculties with form themselves, as well as the seed of other form dharmas, and also the seed of all mind and mental factors alone. Having consciousness is the seed of all kinds of consciousness, as well as the seed of other formless dharmas and sense faculties with form. Except for the form of the great elements, other form dharmas should be known as being only the nature of having their own seeds. The form of the great elements has two seeds, namely the seed of the great elements and the seed of the form that is made into a cause. Thus, all the dharmas that are proclaimed

Thus, whatever is established as possessing the cause of seeds is called the causal condition. If the sense faculties with form, together with their great elements, do not possess the seeds of mind and mental factors, then, in this case, the consciousness of those who have entered into cessation and non-perception, and those born in the realm of non-perceptual beings, will not arise again later, because they are the cause of arising. Therefore, it should be understood that the sense faculties with form arise in dependence upon possessing the seeds of mind and mental factors. If consciousness does not possess the seed of form, then, when ordinary beings are born in the formless realms, and their lifespan and karma are exhausted, they will die and be reborn again below, because there is no seed of form to arise, so form will not arise. Therefore, it should be understood that in dependence upon the consciousness possessing the seed of form, its form arises. When an ordinary being enters into the first dhyana by the worldly path and is born there, then the seeds of those defiled dharmas that are practiced in the desire realm, which are different from that, are only diminished, but not truly destroyed, it should be understood. Why is that? Because, when that ordinary being completely falls away from that samadhi, he will again manifest the defiled dharmas that are practiced in the desire realm, and when he dies from the samadhi of the first dhyana, he will again be born in the desire realm. In that case, the diminution of seeds should be understood in brief as threefold: diminution by complete abandonment, diminution by refutation, and diminution by quiescence. Among these, what is diminution by complete abandonment? For example, in this case, some people abandon the enjoyment of worldly pleasures, truly take up abandonment, and constantly cultivate that truly taken up abandonment, practice it, and do it many times. Because of the cause of constantly cultivating it, the cause of practicing it, and the cause of doing it many times, the mind does not engage in, does not delight in, does not abide in, and does not desire the enjoyment of worldly pleasures.
