So, what is complete degeneration? It is these two: the complete degeneration of abandonment and the complete degeneration of abiding. Among these, the complete degeneration of abandonment only causes ordinary beings to completely degenerate. The complete degeneration of abiding causes both noble ones and ordinary beings to completely degenerate. Among these, having abandoned afflictions through mundane paths and then manifesting them, this is completely degenerated through the complete degeneration of abandonment, and it is also the same for complete degeneration through the complete degeneration of abiding. Having abandoned afflictions through supramundane paths, and with a mind greatly attached to other temporary affairs, due to the cause of non-attention, subsequently, one cannot manifest the comfortable abiding in this life as before, nor can one manifest the afflictions of the lower grounds. If this is the case, then it is completely degenerated through the complete degeneration of abiding, but not the complete degeneration of abandonment. If an Arhat has abandoned all afflictions, and has not completely destroyed the seeds of all afflicted dharmas, then how can that be an Arhat, with a mind that is extremely liberated and with exhausted outflows? If they have been completely destroyed, then in that person's mind-stream, for one who has no seeds of all afflicted dharmas, even mere inappropriate attention will not arise, let alone afflictions. Therefore, for those who have abandoned afflictions through supramundane paths, it should be understood that there is no complete degeneration. So, what is the immediately preceding condition? The mind and mental factors that arise subsequent to the mind and mental factors are called the immediately preceding condition. So, which six consciousnesses are the immediately preceding condition? It is those six consciousnesses that are the immediately preceding condition, and those are also designated as mind, mind-base, and mind-element. So, what is the objective condition? Forms and the other five objects are the objectives of the five aggregates of consciousness.

is the dominant condition. All twelve internal and external sources are the objective condition for the mental consciousness. What is the dominant condition? The simultaneous arising of sources such as the eye is the dominant condition for eye consciousness and so on. The mental activity that directs consciousnesses to their objects is also a dominant condition. Simultaneously arising mental events and mental factors are also a dominant condition for each other, so they are dominant conditions. Previously performed virtuous and non-virtuous actions are also dominant conditions, as they later ripen into desirable and undesirable fruits. Fields, fertilizers, water, and so on are the dominant conditions for the manifest accomplishment of crops. Skillful craftsmanship and the work of craftsmanship are the dominant conditions for the manifest accomplishment of worldly crafts and workplaces. What is the causal condition? It is the very cause of production. The other three conditions besides that should be understood as merely the means of arising. Therefore, whatever action has the seed of action that is the proximate means of arising, that action causes that action to be manifestly accomplished. Therefore, all actions do not arise simultaneously. Relying on these very four conditions, the ten causes should be understood as being established, as explained in the Bodhisattva-bhumi. The Blessed One said that the mind also arises in dependence on past actions, and the mind also arises in dependence on future actions. If past actions do not exist and future actions do not exist, then what is the object of the mind that the Blessed One said arises? If the mind only focuses on something that is non-existent, then what is the Blessed One's well-spoken and well-expressed statement? For example, consciousness arises in dependence on two things. What are the two? From the eye and form, up to the mind and phenomena, the Blessed One well

Then, how can we avoid causing great harm to well-spoken words and eloquent expressions? The mind is what apprehends things that are not the objects of the five aggregates of consciousness. In this regard, the Blessed One taught that, relying on mind and dharmas, mind-consciousness arises. So, how should the Blessed One's intention be understood? For example, mind-consciousness can focus on past consciousness and can also focus on future consciousness. However, consciousness does not belong to the sphere of dharmas. Furthermore, what exists abides in the sense of existence and apprehends the meaning of existence, and what does not exist abides in the sense of non-existence and apprehends the meaning of non-existence. Therefore, mind-consciousness should cognize what exists in the very sense in which it exists, and it should cognize what does not exist in the very sense in which it does not exist. If consciousness does not cognize the meaning of each of these two, then the mind will not be able to focus on all things and will not be able to apprehend all things. If someone says that, then he will cause great harm to the tenets, because it is not reasonable to say that "existence is non-existence." Therefore, just as the past and the future are unreal, so too the mind that focuses on them does not exist, and it should be understood as an object of focus. Furthermore, regarding the question of how to understand that there is mind-consciousness that focuses on what does not exist, there are very broad and extensive reasons that can be presented. The Blessed One's well-spoken words and eloquent expressions, such as "There is no self apart from the internal, the external, or both," and so on. Selflessness itself is neither included in conditioned phenomena nor included in unconditioned phenomena. However, for those who discriminate the general characteristics, it is not the case that consciousness that focuses on this does not arise. Therefore, this is the first argument. Also, form, smell, taste, and tactile objects are the same.
