Because it is not said. Thus, if the Blessed One said that if the past and the future were only endowed with the characteristic of formations (Sanskrit: saṃskṛta, Romanized Sanskrit: samskrta, literal Chinese meaning: conditioned, fabricated), then the objects of the past and the future would not exist, if it were not said that way. Because it has been fully revealed, one should abandon the attachment to the appearance of reality in the past and future dharmas. Just as the past and the future do not exist, so too the present does not exist. The Blessed One, seeing these two meanings of abandoning the attachment of those who are attached, fully revealed it. What is the intention of the Blessed One when he said, "The past realm also exists, and the future realm also exists"? The continuum of the seed (Sanskrit: bīja, Romanized Sanskrit: bija, literal Chinese meaning: seed) arises, and the fruit has already been produced, this is called the past realm. The continuum of the seed arises, and the fruit has not yet been produced, this is called the future realm. The present continuum of the seed, which has not yet produced the fruit, is called the present realm. It should be understood that this is the intention here. Bhikshus, one who is skilled in the continuum of seeds is called skilled in the realms of the immeasurable dharma self, which are various. Why is it that the arising, aging, abiding, and impermanence of form and other formations (Sanskrit: saṃskāra, Romanized Sanskrit: samskara, literal Chinese meaning: formations) are not understood to exist as other realities? For the time being, because the existence of the future formations themselves is prevented, it should be understood that the existence of the reality of arising itself is also prevented. Like this, because future arising does not exist, how can it produce others? Moreover, present arising cannot produce present formations. Furthermore, the term "arising," its synonyms from the perspective of characteristics are like this: the manifestation of the accomplishment of formations, arising, and occurrence themselves. If these are the synonyms, then apart from these synonyms, no other characteristic teachings can be seen. If one says, "How can the present formations themselves arise?" this is not a way that should be spoken by wise and intelligent people. If someone says, "The arising of formations arises," in reality, this is merely fully revealing the statement, "How can the present formations themselves arise?"

Furthermore, for all phenomena that possess distinct and definite seeds as their cause, what is the use of examining another birth that produces them? Moreover, is birth merely the manifestation and accomplishment of conditioned phenomena, or does it become the cause of manifestation and accomplishment? For the time being, if it is merely manifestation and accomplishment, then birth is what causes conditioned phenomena to manifest and accomplish, and it cannot be said that "if there is birth, there will be manifestation and accomplishment." If birth is the cause of the manifestation and accomplishment of conditioned phenomena, then for one conditioned phenomenon, there would be both what causes it to manifest and accomplish and the birth that manifests and accomplishes it, which is not acceptable. Just as with birth, aging, abiding, and impermanence should also be understood accordingly in the same manner. Therefore, it should be understood that birth and so on are also existent in dependence on conditioned phenomena. Among them, if a cause exists, then the accomplishment of its own nature, which was not previously produced, is called the birth of conditioned phenomena. The very fact of changing from the previous to the subsequent, which is different, is called the aging of conditioned phenomena. Remaining only at the time of birth is called the abiding of conditioned phenomena. Therefore, the moment of destruction immediately after the moment of birth is called the destruction of conditioned phenomena. If one can observe the four characteristics of conditioned phenomena—birth, aging, abiding, and destruction—in conditioned phenomena, then why did the Bhagavan only speak of three: birth, destruction, and change, which is different from abiding? Conditioned phenomena are distinguished by the three times. Therefore, in the future, what has not yet arisen will come into being. Therefore, the Bhagavan, relying on the future, said that arising is also a characteristic of conditioned phenomena. What has arisen disintegrates in the past. Therefore, the Bhagavan, relying on the past, said that disintegration is also a characteristic of conditioned phenomena. The two characteristics of what abides and what changes are distinguished by the present time. In this way, abiding is also observed only in the present time, and the previous
