The grossest is vitarka (rtog pa). Not contradicting this, as a cause, and the subtlest is vicāra (dpyod pa). That is called the manifold distinctions of the nature of afflictions that are all-afflictive. What are the manifold distinctions of afflictions that are all-afflictive? In short, the afflictions and near-afflictions, as shown, cause beings to be all-afflicted by two causes, namely, by paryavasthāna and anuśaya. Among these, the arising of manifest afflictions is called paryavasthāna. Its seed, not abandoned and not truly destroyed, is called anuśaya, which is also a bad destination. Because it is not awakened, it is anuśaya, and because of the state of being awakened, it is paryavasthāna. Among these, a person who possesses all bonds, born in the desire realm, possesses the anuśaya of the afflictions that are practiced in the three realms. An ordinary person born in the form realm possesses the anuśaya of the afflictions that are practiced in the desire realm, diminished by the harm of quiescence, and possesses the afflictions that are possessed by the form and formless realms, only not diminished. An ordinary person born in the formless realm possesses the anuśaya of the afflictions that are practiced in the desire and form realms, diminished by the harm of quiescence, and possesses the afflictions that are practiced in the formless realm, only not diminished. Just as from the realm, so too should the ground be observed in the same way. Paryavasthāna, one's own ground, possesses non-separation from the desire of one's own ground, and does not possess separation. One who dwells on a lower ground possesses the paryavasthāna of the higher ground, and one who dwells on a higher ground should be said to never possess the paryavasthāna of the lower ground. Among these, when a person who possesses all bonds generates and prevents the paryavasthāna of afflictions, and does not abandon it, with which past, future, or present things is that affliction associated? It has already become associated with the past.

is not possessed. One possesses the latent predispositions of afflictions that are presently arising and of the same kind, and if the afflictions become manifest, then one also possesses entanglements. The future, as well as latent predispositions and entanglements, will be possessed, but are not possessed. In the same way as that kind and as it is, it is the same for all other afflictions besides that. Just as one possesses all bonds, one should also say that one possesses incomplete bonds in the same way. The difference is that one should say that one possesses the remaining afflictions. When a yogi suppresses the entanglements of afflictions, how does one suppress them? That is, he meditates and suppresses the entanglements of afflictions, and there are three kinds of antidotes that suppress the entanglements of afflictions: fully understanding the nature and faults of afflictions, and attending to the signs that focus on their antidotes, and accumulating virtuous qualities in the mind-stream. For complete destruction, one should regard it as the path of manifesting correct view. When a yogi abandons afflictions, does one abandon them from entanglements or from latent predispositions? From what does one abandon them to be called abandonment? One abandons them from latent predispositions, because entanglements have already been abandoned from the beginning. Having abandoned them from latent predispositions, it is called abandonment. Why is that? Because if one abandons them from entanglements but not from latent predispositions, then entanglements will arise again and again; but if one abandons them from latent predispositions, then neither latent predispositions nor entanglements will ever arise again. Does one abandon the past, or does one abandon the future or the present? One does not abandon the past, nor does one abandon the future, nor does one abandon the present; however, one abandons the past, the future, and the present. Among these, the past that is accompanied by latent imprints is already abandoned because its own nature has ceased, so there is nothing to be abandoned in it.
