In short, all the near afflictions arising from a subtle basis, such as grief, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and disturbance, which are extensively shown, and all the distinctions made from the collection of bases, should be understood as being included in these four kinds of near afflictions. These near afflictions, if in the desire realm, should be understood as arising in dependence on twelve places in summary. What are the twelve places? They are: attachment to misconduct, fighting, revealing secrets, arguing, gambling, breaking vows, abiding in a non-holy dharma as it is, wrong livelihood, wrong attachment to desire, attending to and truly contemplating the meaning of the dharma as it is taught, conforming to the inner peace of mind in the meaning of thought for the sake of bringing the mind into samadhi, adding to each other with material power, adding to each other with dharma power, dwelling unmixed and dwelling in remote places, and being afflicted by suffering arising from separation. It should be understood that by relying on these twelve places, the arising of the near afflictions, such as attachment, etc., up to the ultimate confusion, as previously stated, is established. Among them, attachment, anger, and ignorance arise from the first place. Anger, etc., up to the ultimate flattery, arise from the second place. Shamelessness and lack of embarrassment arise from the third place. Pride, etc., up to the ultimate commission of sins, arise from the fourth place. Deceit, etc., up to the ultimate evil friend, arise from the fifth place. Impatience and stinginess, etc., up to the ultimate attachment to discord, arise from the sixth place. The view of the perishable collection, the view of arising, and the view of destruction arise from the seventh place. Desire for desire, etc., up to the ultimate non-attention, arise from the eighth place. Rudeness and slander arise from the ninth place. Incompatibility, inflexibility, and non-compliance with one's own kind arise from the tenth place.

The discriminations of desire, etc., up to the ultimate of the discriminations possessing household property, are in the eleventh dwelling place. Sorrow, etc., should be understood as entering in dependence on the twelfth dwelling place. Those five views, whatever they are, are of the nature of wisdom, therefore they do not exist equally with each other. Because self-nature and self-nature cannot exist equally. Desire and anger, pride and doubt, because they are mutually inconsistent, they do not exist equally with each other. A mind that has become attached will be humbled, and a mind that has become arrogant will be conceited. Therefore, it should be understood that desire and pride are also mutually inconsistent. Those near afflictions that have been shown, should only be regarded as being in accordance with the side of the afflictions. Therein, for the time being, heedlessness should be regarded as being in accordance with the side of all afflictions. Like this, even if one becomes attached, one will become heedless, and even if one reaches the point of being consumed by doubt, one will become heedless. Attachment, stinginess, arrogance, and excitement are in accordance with the side of attachment, and are the homogeneous cause of attachment. Anger and holding to one's own views, as well as complete torment and jealousy, and various harms, are in accordance with the side of anger, and are the homogeneous cause of anger. Deceit and cunning are in accordance with the side of wrong view, and are the homogeneous cause of wrong view. Concealment should be regarded as only being in accordance with the side of cunning, and is its homogeneous cause. The remaining near afflictions are in accordance with the side of ignorance, and are the homogeneous cause of ignorance. Except for investigation and analysis, investigation and analysis should be regarded as being the nature of wisdom and intention. Just like the views. Whatever wisdom relies on ideation, and moves and enters inconsistently on the object, even though that is its nature, it is called with investigation and with analysis. Therein, wisdom that moves inconsistently on the object and relies on ideation
