and what is uncertain. Its detailed classification, in brief, should be distinguished in five ways: by having mental doubt about the next world, actions and their results, truths, and the Jewels. As the ten afflictions have been shown above, they arise from focusing on objects, and also arise from focusing on afflictions. Among all these ten afflictions, those of the same level focus on each other, and focus on all contaminated objects of their own level. Lower levels focus on the objects of affliction of higher levels. Higher levels do not focus on the objects of affliction of lower levels. How they focus on each other, and how lower levels focus on higher levels, the remaining texts for determining this are not apparent here. Twelfth fascicle. Among these, the co-emergent view of the aggregates in the desire realm is unspecified, because it arises again and again, and because it is not a source of great harm to oneself and others. That which is manifestly fixated by conception is unwholesome. That of the lower level is unspecified because it is closely shown by calm abiding, and because it is completely encompassed by many white dharmas. Obscurations are inherently afflicted and are the very fault of being tainted. The remainder should be understood in accordance with this manner. The afflictions of the desire realm should be regarded as unwholesome because they have become the basis for misconduct. If they have three causes, they are unwholesome and will lead to going to bad destinies, but otherwise it is not certain. What are the three? First, revering and constantly doing them, mostly always relying on them, and not viewing them as faults with a mind of good qualities, and not generating views of their faults and shortcomings, this is the first cause. Second, relying and abiding on those afflictions, and having done and accumulated misconduct with body, speech, and mind, this is the second cause. Third, by this, turning others away from desire from the side of virtue, and

This, causing one to fully grasp the side of non-virtue, is the third cause. Except for previously done deeds that will cause one to experience other retributions in the lower realms. Of those ten afflictions, seven afflictions are those of the mental sphere. Desire, anger, and ignorance are also those of the sphere associated with the five aggregates of consciousness. In the desire realm, the four views and pride are associated with pleasant feeling and equanimity. Desire is associated with pleasure, joy, and equanimity. Anger is associated with suffering and displeasure. Wrong view is associated with both pleasant and unpleasant feelings. Doubt is associated only with unpleasant feeling. Ignorance is associated with all five faculties. This way of association is shown in brief; it will be explained in detail below. In the higher realms, it should be understood that wherever there is whatever faculty, it is associated with the afflictions of that sphere. Of those ten afflictions, those that are to be abandoned by seeing are called baseless, because the basis of their object is not fully established as such. The remaining ones are both based and baseless, because they are the opposite of that. Desire and pride arise by focusing on one agreeable aspect of a contaminated basis. Anger arises by focusing on one disagreeable aspect, therefore those three afflictions are called arising from one aspect and holding one aspect. The remaining ones arise by focusing on a contaminated basis, including internal and external, that is either lovely or unlovely or the opposite of both, therefore they are called all-pervasive and holding all bases, thus those are the afflictions. Afflictions and those that accord with afflictions, those that go together with afflictions, and the near afflictions that do not accord with the side of afflictions. What are the near afflictions? The distinctions of the near afflictions are established in brief in four ways: non-virtuous mind.

arising from all, and arising from all afflicted minds, and arising from each unwholesome mind, and arising from wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral minds, not in all places and not at all times. Among these, shamelessness and recklessness are called near afflictions arising from all unwholesome minds. Non-diligence, excitement, lethargy, lack of faith, laziness, wrong desire, wrong conviction, wrong mindfulness, distraction, and non-intelligence, these ten near afflictions should be understood as arising from all afflicted minds, in all three realms. Anger, resentment, concealment, vexation, jealousy, stinginess, deceit, flattery, pride, and harm, these ten near afflictions should be regarded as arising from each unwholesome mind, wherever one arises, the second does not arise. Among these, except for deceit, flattery, and pride, the rest are associated with desire. Deceit and flattery exist below the first dhyana. Pride should be understood as encompassing the three realms, and those grounds of higher realms are neutral. Among these, the four near afflictions of investigation, analysis, regret, and sleep also arise in wholesome minds, unwholesome minds, and neutral minds, but not in all places and not at all times. Like this, because of repeatedly and for a long time following investigation, and following analysis leading to physical fatigue, and forgetting and decline of mental strength, therefore investigation and analysis are also called near afflictions, these two also exist below the first dhyana. Regret and sleep are practiced in the desire realm. Among these, the near afflictions of the ground of meditative stabilization are like this: investigation, analysis, deceit, flattery, lethargy, excitement, pride, non-diligence, and laziness. Among these, the first four are the ground of the first dhyana. The rest should be understood as being in all grounds and at all times. Bhagavan
