It is helpful, and that which is helpful also causes the senses and the great elements to increase. Mental activity relies on the cause of obtaining the desired object, relying on proper and improper mental activity. The joy of hope, focusing on the future object, is helpful to consciousness, and from that also causes the senses and the great elements to increase. Thus, because the three foods focus on suchness and the future, in order to generate the nature of being powerful in consciousness, and also because consciousness causes the senses and the great elements to increase, one should observe the establishment of the four foods. How is consciousness the food of the root of mind? Thus, relying on the three reliances, that reliance becomes the cause of generating extreme growth and extreme power from above. If sleep and pure conduct and meditative absorption cause the senses and the great elements to increase, why are they not established as food? Answer: Increase

Said: What are those that increase without causing harm? What is life? Said: What is that which increases by helping? What are the foods that beings dwell in and live on? Said: As the action that has been spoken of. How can one help those who wish to be born? Said: Through the consciousness of the three doors (body, speech, and mind), the afflictions and the all-pervasive afflictions of karma increase, and there are two kinds of all-pervasive afflictions that increase. The consciousness that accumulates all-pervasive afflictions through the three doors also helps those who wish to be born, after the end of that birth, to arise from that other. When is a mouthful of food considered food itself? Said: At the time of digestion. At the time of complete enjoyment, touch is considered important, and the help it provides is strengthened. Therefore, food is considered to be contained by the three sense bases (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind), not by color, but by smell, taste, and touch, because they help and cause harm by completely digesting taste, power, and maturation, etc. When is a mouthful of food enjoyed? For example, cold and heat, etc., cause harm, but there is also help at the time of digestion. There is help at the time of enjoyment, but harm at the time of digestion, such as delicious but unhealthy. Therefore, only at the time of digestion is it considered food, not at the time of enjoyment. When there are many other contributing factors besides these, such as birth, past karma, miraculous powers, the collection of causes and conditions, and the elimination of obstacles, why is only food mentioned? Said: Food is shown only because it is numerous, easy to understand, easy to enter into mindfulness, and increases happiness like a day. There is no mouthful of food among hell beings. There is also none among the gods of the meditative states, because hell beings mostly exist through the power of past karma.

Therefore, even great factors that harm the senses and the great elements will not cause death. For these, there is nothing other than the designation of food followed by a small portion of wind. Do those faculties that arise in dependence on something other than the body also depend on the object? If those that arise in dependence on the object also depend on the body? It is said: For the time being, those that arise in dependence on the object also depend on the body. There are also those that arise in dependence on the body but not on the object, namely those that are similar to the form sense faculties, because they depend on the great elements, they are said to depend on something other than that. Are all those that arise in dependence on the faculties in the same place? It is said: There are also those in the same place, namely those similar to the form sense faculties. There are also those in two places, namely those that are similar themselves. There are also those in three places, namely, in the form realm, the faculty of mind and other non-form faculties arising from mind. In the formless realm, these should be regarded as being only in two places. Are all those faculties that are suffering of the nature of suffering? Are all those that are of the nature of suffering suffering? It is said: There are also those faculties that are suffering but are not of the nature of suffering, namely the faculty of pleasure and the faculty of joy. There are also those that are suffering and are of the nature of suffering, namely the faculty of suffering and the faculty of displeasure. There are also those that are suffering but are not of the nature of pleasure and suffering, namely the faculty of equanimity. There are also those that are neither suffering nor of the nature of suffering, namely the last three faculties, because they are the antidote to suffering. Are those faculties that are virtuous those that produce happiness, or are those that produce happiness also virtuous? It is said: There are also those faculties that are virtuous but do not produce happiness.
