If it is caused by conditions, is it also what is indicated? Answer: It is eight. How many faculties need to be tamed? Answer: It is eight. How many need to be completely pacified? Answer: It is one. How many need to be nearly pacified? Answer: It is five. How many are inherently tame, subtle, and nearly pacified, and also enter for the sake of taming, pacifying, and nearly pacifying? Answer: It is eight. What is the decay of the faculties? Answer: It is when the corresponding realms cease, and others arise from them. What is the decaying transformation? Answer: It is when the non-corresponding realms cease, and others arise from them. What is the extreme decay? Answer: It is when the afflictions associated with it are completely abandoned. What is the complete decay of the faculties? Answer: It is when worldly possessions enter into equanimity, and those that decay from birth. What are the differences between the faculties of the Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas? Answer: In short, it should be observed that there are five kinds of differences: the difference of order, the difference of near indication, the difference of bondage, the difference of accomplishment, and the difference of truly accomplishing. Among them, the faculties of the Bodhisattvas are naturally great, while those of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas are small and medium. The faculties of the Bodhisattvas are near to being stable because they are skilled in all fields of knowledge, while those of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas are near to being stable because they are skilled in one aspect of the fields of knowledge. The faculties of the Bodhisattvas are bound by the rope of compassion, while those of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas are not like that. The faculties of the Bodhisattvas abide for the benefit of themselves and others, while those of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas abide for the benefit of themselves. The faculties of the Bodhisattvas are those that truly accomplish the fruit of unsurpassed great Bodhi, while those of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas are inferior and medium Bodhi.

are those that are accomplished purely. If someone enters relying on the non-relenting one in order to realize the truth, will they also attain the fruit and manifest the pleasurable faculty from the first dhyana? It is said: Some of them do. Some of them do not. Those who have sharp faculties and are firmly established by many diverse roots of virtue do. Others do not. How many faculties enter the first dhyana? It is said: Eight. Some enter with the last three. Some do not. Just as it is with the first dhyana, so too should it be regarded with the second dhyana. For the third dhyana, there are only eight. Those themselves are not. The fourth dhyana and the formless absorptions have seven. Some enter absorption with the last three. Some do not. How many faculties attain the fruit of stream-entry? It is said: One or eight. Two or nine should be regarded as attaining the fruit of once-returner. The unpleasant faculty, although it is the basis of the path, is not included because it is not encompassed by the path. The pleasant faculty is also not stable, so it is also not included. If it is included, it should be regarded especially. How many faculties attain the fruit of non-returner? It is said: Eleven or two. The unpleasant faculty should also be regarded in the same way. How many faculties attain the state of arhat? It is said: One or ten. Regarding what is said about desire, pursuit, and complete intention for higher liberation, and unpleasantness, what is desire? It is said: Because the yogi thinks, what dwelling have the noble ones accomplished and abide in? What is pursuit? It is said: Because he thinks, I too shall accomplish and abide in that dwelling. What is complete intention? It is said: It is not being content with what is inferior. What is unpleasantness? It is said: It is the desire for what does not exist. For the stream-enterer and the once-returner
