It should be viewed as such. Whenever doubt arises about the future, that doubt should be seen as arising from not knowing the limits of the afterlife. Doubts arise internally: What is there? What will become? Where did this sentient being come from? Where will they go after dying from here? Whatever doubts arise like this should be seen as arising from not knowing the limits of the past and the limits of the future. Not understanding the internal, not understanding the external, and not understanding the internal and external, all of these, for the internal and external formations, cause rebirth to occur, and are produced by having joyful desire and by the existence of manifest joy in this and that. Furthermore, due to not understanding karma and its ripening, and not understanding karma and its ripening, for sentient beings' karma, not understanding the very thing that should be taken as one's own, relying on this, respect, faith, and devotion arise towards bad places such as Ishvara, Vishnu, and the Lord of Beings. Whatever does not understand the Buddhas and so forth, and the ultimate end of the path, should be understood as generating views. Like this, due to not understanding the Three Jewels and not understanding the Truths, sixty-two kinds of views are generated. There is no giving, there is no sacrifice, observing widely in this way and speaking these words, all of these should be understood as wrong views. Not understanding the cause and the dharmas arising from the cause, and not understanding good and non-good, the extensive lack of understanding as spoken in the sutras, generates manifest pride in the path to go to happy realms and the means to go to happy realms. Like this, those who do not truly understand dharmas such as good and non-good, and desired and undesired results, regard non-means such as not eating food, throwing oneself into fire, and jumping off cliffs as means, and seek high status everywhere. Whatever lack of understanding arises from not truly understanding the six sense bases of contact generates manifest pride in obtaining the fruit of the monastic life. Like this, knowledge that thoroughly understands the six sense bases of contact

If there is nothing, then pride will arise in it. Among them, whatever pride arises in the means of the heavenly realm, and whatever pride arises in the fruit of the path of a renunciate, these combined are called pride. Thus, ignorance gives rise to these five pervasive afflictions, namely: doubt pervasive affliction, desire pervasive affliction, inclination pervasive affliction, view pervasive affliction, and pride pervasive affliction. Among them, a child who is tainted by doubt pervasive affliction, because he obtains doubt and hesitation, relies on others, and is guided by others, therefore in this life he does not experience suffering and happiness. One who is tainted by existence pervasive affliction, because of repeated arising, will manifest sufferings such as birth, old age, and sickness. One who is tainted by inclination pervasive affliction believes that causelessness or discordant causes, such as Isvara, are the cause, and only abides in the absence of personal agency. One who is tainted by view pervasive affliction indulges in committing evil as he pleases, and in the future will manifest the suffering of the lower realms. One who is tainted by pride pervasive affliction will render the actions of a person fruitless and separate from results. The detailed classification of being skilled in dependent origination is like this: it should be understood as shown in the reality of the earth. The remaining part of the treatise on determining the skill in dependent origination does not exist. The skill in the objects of dependent origination is complete. The general summary of being skilled in what is and is not is: the body and the complete display, and the opening of the door is not the last. What is a place? He said: Whatever is not contrary to reason on that basis. What is not a place? He said: On that basis, it is contrary to reason.

It is not the body of the two. For what reason did the Blessed One fully reveal the mastery of what is and what is not? He said: In order to fully reveal that one does not waste (time) by knowing the correct method of both pervasive defilement and purification. How many doors should one look at for what is and what is not? He said: Four. Thus, the Blessed One revealed what is and what is not only through four doors. Like this: the door of accomplishment, the door of accompaniment, the door of attainment, and the door of universal conduct. For what reason are what is and what is not revealed through four doors? He said: In order to fully reveal the doors of all kinds of distinctions. What are those kinds of distinctions? Starting from the door of accomplishment, the remaining aspects not covered by it should be fully stated. Its distinctions should be observed from the confusion of the senses, the confusion of the great elements, and the confusion arising from resources. Among them, the confusion of the senses is this: if the sense of the eye hears sounds, smells odors, tastes flavors, touches tangibles, these are not the place, not the occasion, because there is no place. If one sees forms, that is the place. Just as the sense of the eye is, so too should the distinctions of the remaining form-possessing senses confusing each other be observed. Among them, the confusion of the great elements is this: if earth performs the function of water, the function of fire, the function of wind, these are not the place, not the occasion, because there is no place. If earth performs the function of earth, this is the place. The distinctions of the remaining great elements confusing each other should also be observed in the same way. Among them, the confusion arising from resources is this: if a sprout of another kind arises from a seed of another kind, these are not the place, not the occasion, because there is no place. If it is from something of the same kind, that is the place. If I milk horns and milk comes out, that is not the place, not the occasion.
