If it is completely unimpaired, it is for the sake of the clear arising of consciousness; if it is obscured and completely impaired, it is for the sake of the non-arising of clear consciousness; since consciousness is not a form, it is not inseparable from the object like form. If the eye and the consciousness of the eye are cause and effect entities, then how can the two become simultaneous entities? If they are simultaneous entities, then how can the two be cause and effect entities? It is said: Like a seed and a sprout, it is not possible for consciousness to arise relying on the eye. Why is that? Because the eye is not the cause of producing the consciousness of the eye, but it is the cause of the place, therefore, the two are like a lamp and light, they can be simultaneous entities and cause and effect entities. Just as the eye and the consciousness of the eye are, so should the ear, nose, tongue, body, and their respective consciousnesses be regarded. Otherwise, if it arises from its own seed, then the consciousnesses of the eye, etc., will arise from nowhere, which is not reasonable. Should it be said that the eye element born and produced in the desire realm will necessarily occur? It is said: There it is not certain. Just as the eye element is, so should the ear, nose, and tongue elements, and their respective consciousness elements be understood. The body element will necessarily occur, as will the body consciousness element, the mind element, the dharma element, the mind consciousness element, and the elements of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Should it be said that the eye element born and produced in the form realm will necessarily occur? It is said: It is certain. Just as the eye element is, so are the ear, nose, tongue, and body elements, and the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body consciousness elements. Except for the smell element, the taste element, and their respective consciousness elements, everything else will necessarily occur. In the formless realm

In the realm of form, what arises and occurs, other than the realms of mind, dharma, and consciousness, and other than the form obtained by mastery, is not necessarily produced. These three should be regarded as necessarily produced there. The summary verses here should be viewed like understanding the aggregates. The understanding of the reality of food is complete. The summary verses of the sense bases should also be viewed in the same way as the realms. What is the eye sense base? It is the eye that is obtained and not abandoned, which is not of a nature to immediately cease from the body. Just as with the eye sense base, the remaining sense bases should also be viewed in the same way from their own nature. What is the difference between a sense base and a touch sense base? It is said: A sense base is as previously explained. A touch sense base is the sense base that is touched, and which, being together, immediately produces touch, being in accordance with touch. Is whatever is an eye also a sense base, and is whatever is a sense base also an eye? It is said: There are those that are eyes but not sense bases, namely, the eye that is obtained and not abandoned, but which is immediately of a nature to cease downwards. There are those that are sense bases but not eyes, namely, the remaining sense bases that abide in the nature of sense bases. There are those that are both eyes and sense bases, namely, the eye that is obtained and not abandoned, and which is not of a nature to immediately cease. There are those that are neither eyes nor sense bases, namely, the eye that is not obtained or has been abandoned, and other than that, the ear and so forth, which do not abide closely in the nature of sense bases. Is whatever is a sense base also a touch sense base, and is whatever is a touch sense base also a sense base? It is said: Whatever is a touch sense base is, for the time being, also a sense base. There are those that are sense bases but not touch sense bases, namely, the eye and so forth that do not possess touch, and which do not immediately produce touch, and are not of a nature to cease. The kind that arises and occurs in the realm of form is

The nose and tongue should always be regarded as non-sources. Those faculties that are born among the gods of the realm of unconscious beings should also always be regarded as non-sources. For what reason are they called sources? For what purpose are the sources established? Answer: Because of the meaning of the gate of arising of mind and mental phenomena, the meaning of condition, the meaning of means, the meaning of aggregate of things, the meaning of support, and the meaning of the place where they appear. The sources are established in order to fully show the three kinds of conditions: the immediately preceding condition, the objective condition, and the dominant condition. The distinctions and order of the sources should be viewed as appropriate, just like the elements. The Blessed One spoke in the sutras of the eight spheres of mastery, and similarly, the ten spheres of total exhaustion, and similarly, the four spheres beginning with the sphere of infinite space, and similarly, the two spheres, the sphere of no perception and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and so forth. Whatever dharmas are taught under the name of "sphere," those should also be understood to be included appropriately within the nature of the twelve spheres, as previously stated. The support of the sources should also be viewed just like the elements. Expertise in the nature of the sources is complete. Those dharmas that arise dependently are those that are without an owner, without a maker, without a feeler, whose nature does not move, without independence, produced by causes, relying on conditions and allowing separation, having the nature of arising from what has not arisen, having the nature of disintegrating after arising, merely dharmas that are thoroughly distinguished, only dharmas that can moisten, only dharmas that can cause moistening, belonging to a continuum, and those that are in accordance with suchness; these should be understood as the characteristics of dependently arising dharmas. Among them, whatever is the cause is called dependent arising.
