So, is it also possessed? There are four possibilities: those who possess the ālaya-vijñāna but do not possess the entering consciousness are those who are asleep and mindless, those who have fainted and are mindless, those who have entered the absorption of non-perception, those who have entered the absorption of cessation, and those who are born among the non-perceptual beings. Those who possess the entering consciousness but do not possess the ālaya-vijñāna are the arhats, pratyekabuddhas, non-returning bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas in the state of having mind. Those who possess both are those other than the state of having mind. Those who do not possess both are the arhats, pratyekabuddhas, non-returning bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas who have entered the absorption of cessation, and the realm of nirvāṇa without remainder of aggregates. Because all internal and external dharmas are determined to be their own nature, abiding in their own characteristics. So, why are the six vijñāna-dhātus among the eighteen dhātus established from their own nature, while the other dhātus are established from place, object, and companion? These six vijñāna-dhātus, whether day or night, whether moment or instant, whether a short time or a brief moment, rely on those causes and conditions, rely on the places such as the eye, the objects such as form, and the mental companions, thereby producing various and diverse appearances, and obtain the name of where they arise from. For example, fire relies on whatever causes and conditions it burns, and is counted as that number, the fire that burns relying on grass, wood, dung, chaff, charcoal, etc., from the fire of grass to the fire of charcoal, all are counted as that number. Similarly, relying on the eye and form, etc., consciousness arises, and is counted as the number of eye consciousness, similarly, broadly speaking, relying on mind and dharma, etc.

Depending on the interval, it should be understood as entering the number between the consciousnesses of the mind. Apart from that, the realms of the eye, etc., initially arising from their very nature, are exactly the same as that nature, passing from one life to another, thus constantly following. Consciousnesses of the same kind depend on those causes and those conditions, arising in various different natures, therefore, the realms of consciousness are only distinguished from their own nature, while the realms other than that are distinguished from their place, object, and companion. Starting from fully understanding the collection of consciousnesses, a monk enters the practice of purifying the mind, if one wants to fully understand various minds, in short, there are three ways: from arising joy in all afflictions, the faults of all afflictions, and the methods of eliminating all afflictions. How does a monk enter the practice of purifying the mind, and fully understand the mind from arising joy in all afflictions? Here, when a monk enters the practice of purifying the mind, he thinks like this: My mind has been very fond of all afflictions for a long time, because of being fond of all afflictions, and again being liberated from the state of having desire, when it is necessary to combine with the state of being free from desire, for the state of being free from desire, it will not abide, nor will it rejoice, but will quickly, quickly completely transform, only entering the state of having desire, tending towards, running after it. Just like the state of having desire, the state of having hatred, the state of having ignorance, the state of being depressed, the state of being agitated, the state of being unpacified, the state of being distracted are also the same, being liberated from the state of being careless, when it is necessary to combine with the state of constantly practicing vast virtuous dharmas, for constantly practicing virtuous dharmas, it will not abide, nor will it rejoice, but will quickly, quickly completely transform, only rejoicing in carelessness.

It enters there, completely goes, and then runs, thinking like this. A monk enters into purifying the mind, and thus completely understands the mind from the arising of delight in all afflictions. A monk, having entered into purifying the mind, thus completely understands his own mind from the arising of delight in all afflictions, and then completely understands that mind with all afflictions from its faults in this way. Whatever my mind with desire is, it enters into being harmful to myself, harmful to others, and harmful to both, and it also creates faults in this life and the next life, and in this life and the next life, and it is also the cause of the arising of suffering and unpleasantness arising from the mind that arises from that and that. Just like having desire, it should be understood in the same way up to the arising of delight in carelessness. And he thinks like this: the mind with desire, and the mind up to the arising of delight in carelessness, because of having faults, is a disease with plague, having harm, having contagious disease, having strife. He thinks like this. Having thus completely understood his own mind with all afflictions from its faults, he completely understands from being skilled in the cessation of all afflictions in this way: I will not let my own mind with all afflictions, having faults, having a disease with plague, having harm, having contagious disease, having strife, be turned by the power of this kind of mind, but I will take control of my own mind. Knowing that he should take control of his own mind and will not be turned by the mind, he individually examines and individually examines, and from the mind with desire, he completely ceases from the nature of having desire, and abides in the nature of being without desire, making it rejoice, and also indicates that benefit to him. Similarly, from abiding in carelessness, he completely ceases, and abides in constantly practicing virtuous dharmas.
