It should be observed, that is to say, like this, living together, talking to each other, gaining, respecting, experiencing hardship in life, not respecting the lamas, being intolerant, the higher discipline being lost, the higher mind being lost, and the higher wisdom being lost. What is the nature? That is to say, anger, resentment, concealment, annoyance, jealousy, stinginess, deceit, cunning, arrogance, harm, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, dullness, excitement, disbelief, laziness, carelessness, forgetfulness, distraction, non-mindfulness, regret, sleep, investigation, and analysis. Like this, similar to this, that is to say, what is extensively taught in the Ground of Being should be regarded as the nature of the near afflictions. Among them, the first and second should be understood as arising from the first place. The third and fourth are from the second place. The fifth and sixth are from the third place. The seventh and eighth are from the fourth place. The ninth is from the fifth place. The tenth is from the sixth place. The eleventh and twelfth are from the seventh place. The other twelve will arise from the last two places. Among them, the higher mind and the higher wisdom will be lost through three doors: the door of the sign of calm abiding being lost, the door of the sign of attachment being lost, and the door of the sign of equanimity being lost. Among them, the first will generate dullness and sleep. The second will generate excitement and regret. The third will generate disbelief and so on, up to the end of investigation and analysis. How do these become mutually compatible? Shamelessness and lack of embarrassment are compatible with all non-virtuous things. Disbelief, laziness, carelessness, forgetfulness, distraction, and immoral wisdom are compatible with all afflicted minds. Sleep and regret are also compatible with all virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral things. The rest should be regarded as not being mutually compatible.

It should be so. Among these afflictions that are close to division, how many are included in investigation? How many are substantially existent? Answer: Anger, resentment, concealment, vexation, jealousy, and harm belong to the category of anger, so they are included in investigation. Stinginess, pride, and deceit belong to the category of desire, so these are also included in investigation. Flattery, deception, obstinacy, lethargy, sleep, and regret belong to the category of ignorance, so these are also included in investigation. Shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, disbelief, and laziness are substantially existent. Carelessness is the same as before, included in investigation. Forgetfulness, distraction, and incorrect knowledge are solely included in the category of ignorance, so all are included in investigation. Investigation and analysis are included in the category of all mental fabrications arising from speech and the category of wisdom, so they are included in investigation. How should these afflictions that are close to division be observed as small, medium, and large? Answer: Just like the afflictions themselves. Their basis is also whichever category the afflictions belong to, that is the same category. Detailed classification, faults, and opposing factors should also be observed like the afflictions, and they should be combined accordingly. What are the locations of the unspecified dharmas? Answer: There are four, namely the throwing of karma, which is the manifest and the cause of the manifest, abiding, requisites, and the distinctions of samadhi. What is the nature? Answer: It is said to be the aggregates born from maturation, ordinary dwelling, and conduct included in fabrication, similarly, crafts and play are transformations included in fabrication. How should it be observed that they are mutually equal and corresponding? Answer: It is said that conduct and crafts sometimes have mutual equality and correspondence, as the sutra says, which limits of karma exist when walking, but not when standing, and not when sitting.
