Arising from all the Buddhas who are always perfectly complete, it is like this: What are feelings? What is the arising of feelings? What is the cessation of feelings? What is the path that leads to the arising of feelings? What is the path that leads to the cessation of feelings? What is the enjoyment of feelings? What are the faults? What is the escape? Regarding this, if one contemplates in this way, then the feelings that are truly understood are these three. Because contact arises, feelings arise, as extensively explained in the sutras, it should be understood by distinguishing in this way. The eight aspects of close examination of feelings should also be viewed as fully showing the close examination of one's own nature, the close examination of the cause of arising in this life, the close examination of its cessation, the close examination of the cause of arising in the next life, the close examination of its cessation, the close examination of the cause of arising in both, the close examination of the cessation of arising in both, and the close examination of purification. This is the summary of the sutras, which is the various distinctions of close examination. Among them, the escape from feelings is like this: the escape from unpleasant feelings is the first dhyana. The escape from painful feelings is the second dhyana. The escape from pleasant feelings is the third dhyana. The escape from happy feelings is the fourth dhyana. The escape from neutral feelings is the realm of no characteristics. This is the various distinctions of the escape from the aggregate of feelings. Among them, what are the various distinctions of the aggregate of perception? It should also be viewed from five aspects: object, nature, inverted, not inverted, and complete enjoyment. Among them, the object of the aggregate of perception is taking the sign of the object, and the dharmas that are like its basis. Among them, the nature itself, as before, should be viewed from six aspects. Among them, the general nature is the nature of universal knowing, which is the various distinctions of nature. Among them, the various distinctions of inverted refer to

A foolish child, unintelligent, endowed with ignorance, not applying the mind properly, arises with the perception of permanence in the impermanent object, holding it as a sign. That is their perception being inverted. Just as permanence is perceived in impermanence, so too is happiness perceived in suffering, purity in impurity, and self in selflessness. This is also the same. This inverted perception, in the case of householders, transforms into an inverted mind. In the case of some renunciants, it transforms into an inverted view. Thus, that is the distinction of inversion. Another list of inverted perceptions is that which holds the four objects as perverse signs, that is inverted perception. Whatever pervasive desire knows the object in that way is inverted mind. Whatever manifest clinging, desire, showing, and designation knows and particularly clings to the object of inversion itself in that way is inverted view. The distinction of non-inversion is that the wise, intelligent, and knowledgeable, endowed with clarity, applying the mind properly, hold the sign of impermanence in the impermanent object, the sign of suffering in suffering, the sign of impurity in impurity, and the sign of selflessness in selflessness, and whatever change occurs in truly holding the sign is their non-inverted perception, non-inverted mind, and non-inverted view. Thus, that is the distinction of non-inversion. The distinction of complete severance is that these five are the complete severance of perception: the complete severance of object, the complete severance of feeling, the complete severance of language, the complete severance of wrong, and the complete severance of the meaning of truth. Holding the sign and manifest sign in the object is the complete severance of object. Holding the feeling that necessarily arises from the object is the complete severance of feeling. Designating names such as "this is the name," "this is the species," "this is the lineage" for oneself or others is the complete severance of language. In the object

To hold to the inverted is to completely cut off wrong views. To hold to the object as not inverted is to completely cut off the meaning of truth. Thus, this is the distinction of completely cutting off the aggregate of consciousness. What, then, is the distinction of the aggregate of formation? It should be viewed in five ways: object, time, all-afflictive, all-purifying, and manifest formation. Among these, the object is the establishment of the six collections of consciousness as formation itself. Among these, time is the establishment of formations that are not associated with mind, such as birth and aging, and thus this is distinguished by time. Among these, all-afflictive is the establishment of afflictions and near-afflictions that make formations all-afflictive. Among these, all-purifying is the establishment of dharmas that make things all-purifying, such as faith. Among these, manifest formation is the five kinds of manifest formation, such as that which accords with the object, and it should be viewed as before. What, then, is the distinction of the aggregate of consciousness? It should be viewed in five ways: universal clinging, all-afflictive, place, abiding, and various aspects. Among these, universal clinging is the consciousness of those with desire in the desire realm, which is called only universal clinging to form because of manifest clinging to external form. The consciousness of the pure gods in the form realm is called universal clinging to both of these because of manifest clinging to internal name and form. Consciousness in the formless realm is called universal clinging to name because of manifest clinging to internal name. Thus, this is the distinction of universal clinging of consciousness. Among these, the distinction of all-afflictive is that the consciousness of children becomes all-afflictive through two doors: the door of enjoying objects in this life, and the door of suffering such as birth and aging in the next life. Thus, this is the all-afflictive of consciousness.
