If asked, how are the precepts of a monk, the precepts of a layperson, and the precepts of a lay practitioner established? By three causes. The Buddha's discipline includes those who practice abstaining from misconduct and also abstain from desire; some practice abstaining from misconduct but do not abstain from desire; and some neither abstain from misconduct nor abstain from desire. Therefore, with regard to the first aspect of discipline, the precepts of a monk are established. With regard to the second aspect of discipline, the precepts of a layperson are established. Why is that? Because living in a household is harmful, and living in a place of afflictions, one cannot fully protect a collection of precepts connected like strands of thread. With regard to the third aspect of discipline, the precepts of a lay practitioner are established. Why is that? Because it is not practicing abstinence from both, but only correctly taking up the protection of the causes of both, and not thinking that one is oppressed by a very heavy burden. Its branches are three: the first three are distinguished by abstaining from misconduct; the last four should be seen as distinguished by abstaining from desire; one is distinguished by both, which is abandoning unchaste conduct. If asked, by how many branches are the precepts of a monk encompassed? By how many branches are the precepts of a layperson encompassed? How many branches should one know the precepts of a lay practitioner to be encompassed by? One should know that the precepts of a monk are encompassed by four branches. What are the four branches? The branch of full ordination, the branch of taking up the precepts of the Dharma that are in accordance with it, the branch of protecting the minds of others, and the branch of protecting the collection of precepts after taking them up. Among these, performing the request and the four karmas, and how to take up the major and minor precepts, is the branch of full ordination. If one possesses that branch, then that monk is initially only a monk.

One who possesses the discipline of things is called virtuous. Underneath that, in accordance with the discipline of a Bhikshu in the Pratimoksha, all the bases of training that are in accordance with it are restrained and practiced. Therefore, it is called being restrained by the vows of the Pratimoksha, which is a branch of properly taking the bases of training of the Dharma that is in accordance with it. The perfect ritual and the perfect sphere of activity that possess these two branches are the branches of protecting the minds of others. The perfect ritual and the perfect sphere of activity are as they appear in the Hearer's Ground. Seeing fear in even the slightest faults is for the sake of not generating faults, and for the sake of recovering from faults that have arisen, one takes up the bases of training and learns, such as seeing fear and what has arisen, these two are the branches of guarding how one has properly taken up the bases of training. The Upasaka vow is condensed by three branches. What are the three branches? Abandoning great things that harm others is a branch of properly taking, and a branch of restoring what has been lost from properly taking, and a branch of not losing from properly taking. Among these, abandoning harm to the lives of others, harm to possessions, and harm to wives is the first branch. Abandoning false speech is the second branch. Abandoning alcohol and modified alcohol and mixed alcohol, which are places of carelessness, should be known as the third branch. The Upavasa vow is condensed into five branches. What are the five branches? Abandoning harm to others is a branch of properly taking, abandoning harm to oneself and others is a branch of properly taking, and a branch of restoring what has been lost from properly taking, and a branch of establishing mindfulness in order to not lose from properly taking, and a branch of not making mindfulness confused. Among these, abandoning harm to the lives of others and harm to possessions is the first branch. Abandoning non-celibate conduct is a branch.
