What should be done? For the Shravakas, one should observe many kinds of diverse behaviors. For example, observing the behavior of rivers, the behavior of mountains, the behavior of mountain deer, and so on. Observing these behaviors, why do Shravakas who have attained supernormal powers engage in the practices of pretas? It is to thoroughly inquire into the nature of pretas, the ripening of previous karma. Is it solely to dispel one's own doubts, or is it to benefit sentient beings? If it is said to be solely to dispel one's own doubts, then it is not permissible for one who has attained supernormal powers. If it is to benefit sentient beings, then it must be explained how one benefits sentient beings. It is said: It is indeed to benefit sentient beings, to benefit them and other sentient beings. For example, through the power of his supernormal knowledge, he remembers the previous lives of those pretas, and thus they remember their past misdeeds. They then take refuge in the teacher, feel remorse, and also focus their minds on listening to the Dharma. Therefore, they will quickly be completely liberated from the realm of pretas. Thus, this is how one benefits those pretas. Having heard the various undesirable results of their previous actions, the Shravaka who has attained supernormal powers also convinces others. Others, having heard this, will feel disgusted and abandon non-virtue, and then engage in the perfect practice of virtue. Thus, this is how one benefits sentient beings other than them. If one wishes to observe the form of beings in the desire realm, one should observe its grossness in six ways. What are the six kinds of grossness? They are grossness in terms of multiplicity, grossness in terms of impurity, grossness in terms of roughness, grossness in terms of heaviness, grossness in terms of changeability, and grossness in terms of not following the mind. The determination of the Shravaka-bhumi is complete, and the remaining part of the determination is not apparent. Pratyekabuddha

The treatise on the determination of the ground is non-existent. Just as the lineage of the Hearers is established, so too, in the treatise on the determination of the Bodhisattva ground, it should be understood that the lineage of the Bodhisattvas is also established. There are ten kinds of generation of the mind of enlightenment: namely, arising from correct engagement through indication, obtained by the nature of reality, uncertain, certain, not completely pure, completely pure, of little power, endowed with power, with fruit not completely accomplished, and with fruit completely accomplished. Among these, arising from correct engagement through indication refers to all those who have not yet entered the actual faultless path of the Bodhisattva. Among these, obtained by the nature of reality refers to those who have entered the actual faultless path of the Bodhisattva, and those Hearers who are completely transformed into enlightenment. Uncertain refers to those who are not of these kinds, and those who have the nature of reverting from the generation of the mind of enlightenment. Certain generation of the mind of enlightenment should be understood as the opposite of this. Among these, not completely pure is when, for example, some people follow others, or are afraid of the king, or are seized by thieves, or are threatened by officials, or are threatened by floods, or for the sake of livelihood, or for the sake of gain and honor, or for the sake of flattery and solicitation, without careful consideration, without complete examination, generate the mind with a deceitful heart, and those who generate the mind in a similar way, it should be known that this is not completely pure. Completely pure should be understood as the opposite of this. Among these, of little power is when, for example, some Bodhisattvas are completely enveloped by afflictions such as desire, hatred, and ignorance, are overwhelmed by them, are completely diminished from the correct practice, and are completely conjoined with evil practices. Endowed with power should be understood as the opposite of this. Among these, with fruit not completely accomplished refers to the period from the ground of faith-practice up to the tenth ground. Among these, with fruit completely accomplished refers to the ground of the Tathagata, the Blessed One said, "I am freed from that ascetic practice, by means of my own true aspiration and the mind of enlightenment."
