It is as it is said, one can also obtain it. Among these ten bodhicittas, which are afflicted? Which are not afflicted? Such detailed treatises on discernment are not seen. The four minds of a Bodhisattva are the actions of constantly and continuously guarding: the mind arising from hearing and thinking, the mind of compassion, the mind of accumulation, and the mind arising from meditation. A Bodhisattva's efforts based on his own benefit and the benefit of others are these nine: effort in samsara, effort for sentient beings, effort for oneself, effort for desires, effort in the actions of body, speech, and mind, effort to avoid harming sentient beings, effort to constantly meditate on virtuous dharmas, effort for the inner mind's quiescence, and effort to see the nature of things through higher wisdom. How should a Bodhisattva strive in samsara? It is like a sick person treating medicine. How should one strive for sentient beings? It is like a doctor treating a patient. How should one strive for oneself? It is like a wise king treating an untrained servant. How should one strive for desires? It is like a merchant traveling on a trade route treating goods. How should one strive for the actions of body, speech, and mind? It is like a dyer treating cloth. How should one strive to avoid harming sentient beings? It is like a father treating a young son, preventing him from falling into a cesspit. How should one strive to constantly meditate on virtuous dharmas? It is like someone desiring fire rubbing wood. How should one strive for the inner mind's quiescence? It is like a king restraining his mind to obtain wealth. How should one strive to see the nature of things through higher wisdom? It is like a skilled magician performing magic. The treatise on discernment is complete.

Ma does not appear! To act wrongly towards the five kinds of sentient beings, it should be said that it is without compassion, without love, and without subsequent love. What are the five? Towards those who desire, those who are in need, those who desire to benefit, those who desire happiness, and those who desire Dharma. Among them, desire is of five kinds, namely, desiring food, desiring clothes, desiring shelter, desiring medicine for healing sickness, desiring utensils, and desiring refuge. Need is also of five kinds, namely, being in suffering, being confused, coming for refuge, trusting, and completely relying. Benefiting is also of five kinds, namely, parents, sons, wives, male servants, female servants, workers, those who live on wages, friends, partners in discussion, relatives, and marriage connections. Desiring happiness is also of five kinds, namely, desiring the happiness of accomplishing one's work, desiring the happiness of not being separated from the accomplishment of one's work, desiring the happiness of being separated from the suffering arising from seasonal changes, desiring the happiness of resting, and desiring the happiness of accomplishing something special. Desiring Dharma is also of five kinds, namely, desiring to teach the holy Dharma, desiring to listen, desiring to recite, desiring to distinguish detailed speech, desiring instruction and subsequent teachings, and desiring to practice Dharma in accordance with the Dharma. Among them, acting wrongly should be understood from the action of doing, or the action of not doing, or the action of harming, or the action of ordinary action. For sentient beings, there are five kinds of lack of merit. Sentient beings who possess these, even the Tathagatas find it difficult to subdue, what need is there to mention Bodhisattvas or others? For them, even if the Tathagatas want to benefit, want to help, want to bring happiness, those actions of benefit, help, and happiness will not manifest, and for them, effort will also be in vain. What need is there to mention Bodhisattvas or others? What are the five? They are the lack of pure merit, the lack of the merit of action, and its fruit.

I have no fortune to achieve, no fortune to practice and accomplish its fruit, and no fortune to benefit. Among them, the lack of pure fortune is like this: for example, some people are by nature unable to completely escape from suffering. Among them, the lack of practice fortune is like this: for example, some people are of a nature that can completely escape from suffering, and their mind stream is also completely mature, but at that time, they did and accumulated karma that would hinder correct practice, so they have no fortune to practice in this life. Among them, the lack of fortune to fully achieve its fruit is like this: for example, some people are of a nature that can completely escape from suffering, but their mind stream is not completely mature, and although they have not done and accumulated karma that would hinder correct practice, therefore they have no fortune to fully achieve its fruit. Among them, the lack of fortune to practice and fully achieve its fruit is like this: for example, some people's continuum is of a nature that can completely escape from suffering, but the continuum is neither completely mature, nor have they done and accumulated karma that would hinder correct practice at that time, so they have no fortune for both. Among them, the lack of fortune to benefit is like this: for example, some people, because at that time they did and accumulated karma that would lead to poverty, destitution, suffering, and disgusting feelings, therefore they have no fortune to become rich, wealthy, or happy at that time. The five situations of having fortune should be understood from the opposite of this. If you want to fully understand its meaning, in short, to fully understand the five things, the summary is: the teachings and classifications are the same, existence and entity and conventional, complete arising and difference, characteristics and forms are tangible. What are the five things? Cause, name, discrimination, suchness, and correct wisdom. What is the cause? In short, manifestation
