It is. If one completely eliminates even the remaining habitual tendencies and attains the cessation of suffering in the lower realms, that is the fourth quality. If a person who is not yet mature renounces, then in this life they will be completely liberated from the harms of household life and various sufferings. Furthermore, in the future, their mindstream will mature, giving rise to various roots of virtue that are in accordance with the aspects of liberation. That is the fifth quality. All contaminated formations are suffering, and one should understand that they are related to the nine aspects of the three types of suffering. What are the three types of suffering? They are the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of conditioned existence. What are the nine aspects? They are the three aspects of each of the three types of suffering. All contaminated formations are related to these nine aspects, which are related to death and transference, related to the causes that incite lower realms, related to being born in lower realms, related to impermanence due to the nature of impermanence, related to suffering due to the nature of suffering, related to selflessness due to the nature of selflessness, related to the arising and abiding of pleasure in formations like places where one experiences taste, related to the suffering of change, and related to the fact that even wise people, relying on the suffering of change itself, are necessarily related to incomplete renunciation. A bhikṣu who dwells within a monastic community, if he possesses four qualities, then he correctly instructs the community, is worthy of gathering the community, and engages for the benefit of himself and others. What are the four? They are: being separated from the afflictions of proximity, not being without knowledge, the virtuous qualities that have arisen abide and are not forgotten, the practice is fully accomplished, and he relies on and cultivates them in order to increase and expand them, and he relies on and cultivates them in order to generate virtuous qualities that have not yet arisen.

How does a monk become separated from the proximate defilements? The proximate defilements are these five: attachment when dwelling in a house; broken discipline; improper attention with universal conceptualization of remembering previous experiences; greed of being completely infatuated with future realms; displeasure; and being stingy towards the Dharma. Whatever does not know the self-nature of form, which is born and transformed from arising, as it truly is, that is, from father, mother, son, wife, to friends, companions, relatives, and elders, only the color and shape, and laughing and playing, etc., only the actions of body and speech, having the attention of perceiving as sentient beings, completely discriminating reversely from this attention, and arising the prideful thought of "my father, mother, son, wife, to friends, companions, relatives, and elders." Therefore, this basis will generate attachment when dwelling in a house. The wise, knowing form only as its own nature, without the concept of sentient beings, this will not occur. Therefore, he is separated from the first proximate defilement. This is because the self-nature of form is separately established, existing separately, relying on various different forms, either seeing for a very long time, or seeing mixed with other things, one will think, "My father, mother, son, wife, to friends, companions, relatives, and elders are other," and thinking that for sentient beings born without form, there is none. Furthermore, the fool does not fully know the self-nature of the fool as it truly is, and does not fully know the self-nature of the wise as it truly is. Because he does not fully know these as they truly are, he will have wrong thinking, wrong speech, wrong actions, and the conduct of body, speech, and mind is completely impure, discipline and livelihood are completely impure. But the wise fully know these as they truly are, so one should know that it is the opposite of this. Thus

Therefore, it is devoid of the second proximate affliction. Furthermore, a child neither fully knows what is inappropriate attention as it truly is, nor fully knows what is appropriate attention as it truly is. Towards unpleasant things, such as objects of desire and attachment, previously experienced, they attend inappropriately, discriminating with discriminations of desire, accepting and grasping them, not abandoning, not eliminating, not purifying them. Towards unpleasant things, such as objects of malice, they discriminate with discriminations of malice. Towards unpleasant things, such as objects of harm, they discriminate with discriminations of harm. The rest should be understood as before. But the wise fully know what is inappropriate attention as it truly is, and fully know what is appropriate attention as it truly is. They do not even recall those previously experienced things as described above, but attend appropriately. Because of mindfulness, when an object arises that is any of the discriminations from desire to harm, they do not accept and grasp it, but abandon, eliminate, and purify it. Therefore, it is devoid of the third proximate affliction. Furthermore, a child neither fully knows the benefit of guarding the senses as it truly is, nor fully knows the fault of not guarding them as it truly is. Therefore, with respect to their respective objects, when something arises and becomes manifest, the mind becomes completely defiled by attachment and anger. With respect to pleasant objects such as forms, wanting to look at them, because the unpleasant is contrary to this, therefore, whatever desire there is for the pleasant should be recognized as their greed. Thus, one who possesses greed becomes displeased and unhappy when other objects come near. The wise are the opposite of this, and should be observed as before. Therefore, it is devoid of the fourth proximate affliction.
