It should be known that it is perfect with five causes: relying on the antidote, abandoning unfavorable factors, doing one's own work, belonging, and distinguishing them. The feelings themselves are feelings of suffering caused by hunger or caused by food. Living is the increase of pure conduct. Strength is the ability to destroy unfavorable factors. Happiness is living happily in this life. Being without fault is completely purifying merit. Abiding in contact with happiness is manifesting the abandonment of afflictions and suffering. Not sleeping should be known as being perfect with diligence initiated by constant practice and respectful practice. Among them, the practice of respectful practice should be known from following walking and sitting. When sitting, it is to counteract the first, second, and fourth obscurations. When walking, it is to counteract the third. When both are done, it is to counteract the fifth. The practice of constant practice is because one does not sleep during the two sessions of day and night, and because one sleeps well at noon like a lion and a fellow practitioner. In order to abandon long, thick, drowsy, and continuous sleep, from placing one foot on top of the other until the thought of getting up arises, one should know. Acting with mindfulness is based on moderation in five places, and should be known as perfect. What are the five? They are walking, looking, obtaining and respecting possessions, enjoying possessions, and engaging in virtuous activities. First, one should not go to places that are not suitable for practice at all, and even if it is a place for practice, one should not return very late. Second, for seeing without prior consideration, one should restrain the senses, and for seeing with prior consideration, one should establish mindfulness. Third, when getting up and prostrating, one should not overextend or over-contract the hands and feet. Fourth, one should know the use of robes, bowls, and alms like a merchant. Fifth, one should properly apply the mind inwardly.

Diligence in walking and dwelling during the day, and in walking, standing, dwelling, not sleeping, and sleeping at night, one should know the measure. Diligence in determining relevant speech, one should know the measure in speaking and not speaking. For both of these, in order to make the body fit, one should know the measure in dispelling the dullness of sleep. Thirtieth fascicle. A monk's diligent practice of cultivating the feet of miraculous power is comprised of four branches: the branch of cultivation, the branch of discerning excellence, the branch of perfecting the guarding of near afflictions, and the branch of gathering for the sake of purifying near afflictions. Among these, the branch of cultivation is desire and effort, that is, relying on desire and effort to cultivate the feet of miraculous power. The branch of discerning excellence is faith and extreme pliancy, that is, with faith, one discerns excellence and generates superior faith in the higher liberations, and with extreme pliancy, one extremely subdues the coarseness of body and mind. The branch of perfecting the guarding of near afflictions is mindfulness and awareness, that is, with mindfulness, one guards against the arising of near afflictions of calm abiding and insight, and with awareness, one knows the arising of near afflictions. The branch of gathering for the sake of purifying near afflictions is attention and equanimity, that is, with attention, one gathers back the disheartened mind, and with equanimity, one gathers inward the agitated mind. There are four dharmas that empower the attainment of samadhi: listening, good instruction, prior habituation, and much learning. Among these, listening is like this: generating desire and faith, one listens to the true Dharma, and by this cause and condition, one will attain single-pointedness of mind. Among these, good instruction is like this: relying on instructing in accordance with the order and instructing without inversion, one initiates diligence and abides, and with diligence, one constantly engages in the dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of perfect enlightenment and cultivates with constant diligence.

Remaining diligent after the seal, through that cause and that condition, one will attain single-pointedness of mind. The prior habituation for that is being close in time to meditative stabilization and entering into meditative stabilization with little gap. Through that cause and that condition, one will attain single-pointedness of mind. The great learning for that is having great learning, holding learning, accumulating learning, and then going alone to a solitary place and thinking about those dharmas, measuring them, and closely understanding them. Through that cause and that condition, one will attain single-pointedness of mind. Striving to attain samadhi, one should know seven dharmas: the cause of the decline of internal samadhi, the cause of the decline of external samadhi, the decline of internal samadhi, the decline of external samadhi, the antidote to the decline of internal samadhi together with its cause, the antidote to the decline of external samadhi together with its cause, and the basis of the antidote to both. The cause of the decline of internal samadhi is laziness. The cause of the decline of external samadhi is excitement. The decline of internal samadhi is drowsiness and sleep. The decline of external samadhi is being distracted by the five objects of desire. The antidote to the decline of internal samadhi together with its cause is properly grasping the characteristics of individual discrimination. The antidote to the decline of external samadhi together with its cause is individually discriminating this very body as impure. The basis of the antidote to both is the perception of light. How does one contemplate the body as having the nature of arising? One contemplates the present body as truly arising from food since past times. How does one contemplate the body as having the nature of decay and abide? One contemplates the present body as truly having the nature of death in future times. How does one contemplate the body as having the nature of arising and decay? The body, arising from the condition of food, abides and decays in the present time.
