These are the various distinctions of birth. Among them, the various distinctions of place and object refer to the six consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness. Among them, eye consciousness discerns forms. The other consciousnesses also discern their respective objects. Mental consciousness discerns everything from the eye and forms up to the mind and phenomena. Among them, the consciousness associated with painful feeling is called completely diminished, because it discerns unpleasant things such as places of suffering and displeasure. The consciousness associated with pleasant feeling is called not completely diminished, because it discerns pleasant things such as places of happiness and joy. The consciousness associated with feeling that is neither painful nor pleasant is called neither completely diminished nor not completely diminished, because it discerns things such as places of equanimity. Thus, these are the various distinctions of completely diminished and not completely diminished. Among them, the consciousness associated with unwholesome things or defiled things is called inferior, because it discerns the objects of the afflicted consciousness. The consciousness associated with wholesome things is called superior, because it discerns the objects of the consciousness associated with wholesomeness. The consciousness associated with unspecified things is called neither inferior nor superior, because it also discerns the objects of its realm. Thus, these are the various distinctions of inferior and superior consciousness. All mental factors that arise with the mind, and all wholesome minds and the mental factors that arise from them, are called the various distinctions of mental factors. The rest is…

Thus one should observe. In the case of contaminated dharmas, one should observe as previously explained. Among them, there are five that arise with all minds: attention, contact, feeling, perception, and intention. Their characteristics have already been explained in the section on the mind. There are ten that arise with all virtuous minds: namely, knowing shame, knowing embarrassment, non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, faith, diligence, non-carelessness, non-harming, and equanimity. These also arise in the mind that is in a state of meditative stabilization, and also arise in the mind that is not in a state of meditative stabilization; in the mind that is in a state of meditative stabilization, one should especially recognize that they are extremely disciplined. Among them, non-carelessness should be regarded as a designated dharma. The consciousness that is in accordance with these cognizes all dharmas; thus, it is a differentiation of the dharmas to be cognized that has arisen from the mental dharmas. Among them, there are fifteen minds that belong to the unfavorable side: the suffering of the desire realm, the origin, the cessation, the path seen, and the five to be abandoned by cultivation; just as with the desire realm, the five of the form realm; and the five of the formless realm. There are sixteen minds that are antidotal: the uncontaminated, the learners, and the non-learners. These consciousnesses that belong to the unfavorable side and are antidotal also cognize the dharmas that are their objects. The differentiations of birth are briefly five types: the cause of birth in the desire realm, the cause of birth in the form realm, the cause of birth in the formless realm, where one goes, and returning below. Among them, after the virtuous mind, the afflicted mind, and the obscured and unindicated mind that are associated with desire, all minds associated with desire arise; thus, this is the differentiation of the births of consciousnesses that arise from the cause of birth in the desire realm. Just as with those associated with desire, those associated with form and those associated with formlessness each have the consciousnesses of their respective grounds.

Moreover, after each of these three, all three minds of their respective grounds will arise. In order to generate previously unarisen dhyanas and formless realms, after a virtuous mind operating in the desire realm, a virtuous mind of the first dhyana ground will arise; and after a virtuous mind of the first dhyana ground, a virtuous mind of the second dhyana ground will also arise. Similarly, after the virtuous mind of the ground of the sphere of nothingness, it will arise up to the virtuous mind of the peak of existence. After a virtuous mind operating in the form realm, a non-learning mind will also arise; and after a learning mind, a non-learning mind will also arise. If he has previously generated dhyanas and formless realms, then he will not completely degenerate from those. After a virtuous mind operating in the desire realm, for whatever higher ground and fundamental mind of learning and non-learning he wishes to manifest, in order to properly grasp the aspects and characteristics, that and that consciousness will arise. Similarly, after the virtuous minds of the higher and remaining grounds, it should also be seen that the minds of the higher grounds will also arise. After an unspecified mind operating in the desire realm, a virtuous mind operating in the form realm will also arise, such as the mind of emanation operating in the desire realm after having the fruit operating in the form realm. It should also be known that after that virtuous mind operating in the form realm, an unspecified mind operating in the desire realm will also arise. It should be known that it is the desire realm itself, because it is the similar kind of image, but not the nature itself. After dying from this mind possessing virtue and unspecified nature in the desire realm, for those who are born above, from the first dhyana up to the peak of existence, a defiled mind of the higher ground will arise, because in this way, in all cases, the connection is made by a defiled mind.
