Since it does not arise in any way and protects the minds of others, it is called without affliction. That is how it protects the mind: For any village or town, whatever village and town it dwells near and relies on, it gradually observes the minds of all those who dwell in that village and town, and thus observes the future minds of each individual on all the great roads and in all the houses. When it observes in this way, if it knows that this person in this village and this town, this street and this house, will generate afflictions merely by seeing me, or even if not merely by seeing, will generate afflictions by following, then it will completely avoid being seen by those sentient beings in all ways. If it sees that following is permissible, then at that time, with that basis, it will allow those sentient beings to see it from afar. If it sees that following is not permissible, and it has followed, if it sees that afflictions arise in the continuum of others, then at that time, with that basis, it will make it so that those sentient beings do not see it at all. Like what kind of speech is generally proclaimed, like what kind of behavior, like what kind of enjoyment, enjoying robes and so on, like what kind of teaching, like what kind of causing to correctly hold, if it sees that afflictions arise in the continuum of others by these, from such speech proclaimed to the vast causing to correctly hold, it also completely avoids, thus protecting the minds of others. Because it mostly dwells in that way and acts in that way, therefore it is called dwelling without affliction. What is it that is known through aspiration? Here, a Bhikshu Arhat, liberated from the two parts, with sharp faculties, relying on completely meditating on the limit of the four dhyanas, through aspiration: How much is the scope of knowledge of a Shravaka with the knowledge of a Shravaka, and how much is the scope of knowledge of a Pratyekabuddha with the knowledge of a Pratyekabuddha, that which is to be known, one should know in this way, and then.
