And thus, the foundation of learning is established. What constitutes the greater practice of faults and the non-practice of faults in these two cases? The Tathagata, seeing that those with autonomy do not further engage in faults, does not establish a foundation of learning. However, seeing that those without autonomy further engage in faults, the foundation of learning is established. Furthermore, the establishment of transgressions should be deeply understood through five aspects. What are these transgressions? They are the obstacles to the arising of virtuous qualities. These obstacles are of five types: the obstacle of laziness, the obstacle of blameworthiness, the obstacle of contempt, the obstacle of regret, and the obstacle of knowledge. What is the obstacle of laziness? It is being lazy towards virtuous qualities and not striving diligently. What is the obstacle of blameworthiness? It is when someone here is completely bound by desire, or completely bound by hatred, or completely bound by ignorance, or becomes afflicted by any of the secondary defilements arising from the mind. They then engage in generating the complete binding of defilements and secondary defilements. What is the obstacle of contempt? It is when someone here does not adhere to the training, lacks strong respect for the training, does not view transgressions as fearful, and even brings them forth. Even if they occur, they do not turn back. They are by nature disrespectful towards the teacher and the training. What is the obstacle of regret? It is when someone here is touched by a constant stream of regret that is characteristic of defilements. They are unable to properly and thoroughly dispel that regret, and are constantly filled with regret, varied regret, and remembrance. What is the obstacle of knowledge? It is when someone here, filled with remembrance, does not generate supreme joy due to the impure basis of the training. They do not generate great joy, and from not generating great joy, they do not generate joy. Their mind does not transform into equanimity. If the mind is not established in equanimity, they do not fully know things as they truly are, and they do not see things as they truly are. Therefore, it is called the obstacle of knowledge.

If touched by the obscuration of laziness, it transforms into a nature that delights in accepting afflictions and near afflictions, and the nature of delighting in acceptance is touched by the obscuration of wrongdoing. If touched by the obscuration of wrongdoing, there is no fierce respect for the trainings, and one desires to confess transgressions. Thus, desiring to confess transgressions is touched by the obscuration of disdain. If touched by the obscuration of disdain, it generates afflicted remorse, and one is unable to dispel the remorse that has arisen, so it is touched by the obscuration of regret. If touched by the obscuration of regret, it is accompanied by remorse, so that one's mind does not transform until it abides equally. If the mind does not abide equally, it is touched by the obscuration of knowable objects, and this is the order of those obscurations. The five non-obscurations that are the opposite of these should be understood as the absence of the obscuration of laziness, the absence of the obscuration of wrongdoing, the absence of the obscuration of disdain, the absence of the obscuration of regret, and the absence of the obscuration of knowable objects. Among these, if the superior intention is diminished, one will not even turn to confessing transgressions for a while, let alone seeing the absence of transgressions. What is the diminishing of the superior intention? It should be viewed in five ways: not wanting to exert effort, wanting to accept afflictions, wanting to further confess transgressions, not wanting to dispel regret, and not wanting to cultivate samadhi. If the superior intention is complete, there are no transgressions, so what need is there to say about arising from transgressions? What is the completion of the superior intention? It should be viewed in five ways: wanting to exert effort, not wanting to accept afflictions, not wanting to confess transgressions, wanting to dispel regret, and wanting to cultivate samadhi. The Blessed One said, "I speak of arising from transgressions with a true intention, not with an act of annihilation." As it is said, transgressions should be sought from ten places: the Dharma of individual liberation vows, its differentiated discipline, and the characteristics of the lighter transgressions of the five categories of transgressions.
