Not being distracted, not doing useless things, not doing excessive things, not doing evil deeds, not doing wrong things, not being overly diligent, not being overly indulgent, not being frivolous and reckless, not being afflicted, not contradicting the world, not engaging in behavior that violates the precepts, thus a monk diligently applying himself to the training of discipline should maintain mindfulness during this fifth period. How should a monk, diligently applying himself to the training of discipline, starting from the enjoyment of gains and respect, also maintain mindfulness during this sixth period? That is, whatever gains and respect a monk may obtain, he should enjoy those gains without attachment, without clinging, without hoarding, without intermediate obstacles, without bewilderment, without excessive craving, not excessively craving and abiding, viewing them as faults, thoroughly understanding renunciation and enjoying them, and overcoming the gains and respect that have arisen, and the mind that arises from gains and respect should not completely occupy and dwell in his mind, thus a monk diligently applying himself to the training of discipline should maintain mindfulness during this sixth period. How should a monk, diligently applying himself to the training of discipline, starting from seeking to hear, maintain mindfulness during this seventh period? That is, a monk should abandon the works of poets, or the various letters, various words and phrases conceived by poets, and the teachings that are contrary to the world, and for the sutras spoken by the Tathagata, which appear profound, possess emptiness, and accord with the principle of dependent origination of this arising from that, one should be respectful, uphold, understand, and should not view them from the perspective of debate and benefit, and should not understand all dharmas. One should not view them from the perspective of the benefit of liberation from debate, and should not understand all dharmas. One should not understand all dharmas for the sake of gains and respect, but should do so in this way: to tame oneself, to pacify oneself, to completely liberate oneself from suffering, and to engage in virtuous conduct.

Regarding the meaning of the conduct of Oṃ, and the meaning of the Brahmin, and starting from the attainment of the supreme meaning, to comprehend all dharmas, and he listens to those dharmas, holds them well, recites them completely, reflects on them with his mind, and understands them very well through seeing, in this way, a monk, diligent in the training of discipline, should be mindful in the seventh time. How should a monk, diligent in the training of discipline, starting from thinking about the holy Dharma, be mindful in this eighth time? That is, a monk goes alone to a solitary place, and contemplates the meaning of all the dharmas as he has heard, as he has been taught, and as he has comprehended. He measures, and knows in detail, he contemplates what should be contemplated, and abandons what should not be contemplated. For some, he also believes with faith; for some, he analyzes with wisdom, contemplates relying on the meaning, and does not contemplate relying on the words. And, for the black teaching, he also knows it as it is; for the great teaching, he also knows it as it is, and contemplates it with his heart. He contemplates the teaching, contemplates the vastness, and makes that contemplation reach the ultimate, without giving up halfway, in this way, a monk, diligent in the training of discipline, should be mindful in the eighth time. How should a monk, diligent in the training of discipline, starting from extreme solitude, be mindful in this ninth time? That is, a monk does not dwell among householders, and among renunciates, does not mix with them, does not laugh together, does not grieve together, and even for all the things that happen to prosper, he accepts them as they are, does not ultimately follow them, and dwells in solitary forests, remote dwellings, away from sentient beings, and away from objects and distractions, and laziness, and tranquility and insight, and the near afflictions of tranquility and insight, in this way, a monk, diligent in the training of discipline, should be mindful in the ninth time. How should a monk, diligent in the training of
