The discipline of harmlessness, the discipline of steadfastness, the discipline of definite departure, the discipline of victory over adverse forces, the discipline of non-retrogression, the discipline of non-commonality, the discipline of unsurpassedness. A monk, diligent in the training of discipline, should be mindful in ten times. What are the ten times? Namely, arising from offenses, arising from meditative absorption, arising from birth, arising from the practice of alms-seeking, arising from immediate activities, arising from the enjoyment of gains and honor, arising from the complete seeking of learning, arising from thinking about the sacred Dharma, arising from extreme solitude, and arising from the limit of realization. How does a monk, diligent in the training of discipline, being based on offenses, be mindful in this first time? Here, a monk possessing the previous boundary, called and so on, as previously shown, possessing mindfulness gathered by the five branches, thus, a monk diligent in the training of discipline, being based on offenses, should be mindful in this first time. How does a monk, diligent in the training of discipline, being based on meditative absorption, be mindful in this second time? Here, a monk, whether dwelling in a forest hermitage or dwelling at the foot of a tree, from the obscuration of desire-desire up to the obscuration of doubt, whatever obscurations arise, he does not accept them all, but abandons them, dispels them, and purifies them. Having abandoned those five obscurations that closely afflict the mind, until one cannot escape from suffering, he also meditates on the sign of calm abiding from time to time, he also meditates on the sign of superior seeing from time to time, and he also meditates on the sign of equanimity from time to time. Thus, being skilled in the sign of calm abiding, skilled in the sign of superior seeing, and skilled in the sign of equanimity, if he knows that the mind is sinking or fears sinking, he is only skilled in superior seeing. If he knows that the mind is agitated or fears agitation, he is only skilled in truly pacifying it inwardly. If the mind has become equal, then equanimity.

Also, one makes an effort to abide in mindfulness, and when one obtains such samadhi, one does not savor its taste, nor does one bring it to an end, nor does one especially cling to it, nor does one especially cling to it and abide in it. Thus, a bhikshu, diligent in the training of discipline, should be mindful in the second time. How should a bhikshu, diligent in the training of discipline, be mindful in this third time, starting from birth? Here, when a bhikshu is about to die, he should generate a strong mind of intention, thinking: 'Will I die with the mindfulness focused on the Buddha? Or with the mindfulness focused on the Dharma, the Sangha, and virtue, will I die with a virtuous mind?' Thus, he generates his mind, and in this way, he guards his mind and establishes mindfulness. Why? Because dying with mindfulness focused on the Buddha, and extensively, dying with a virtuous mind, dying with mindfulness focused on the Buddha, and extensively, dying with a virtuous mind, that death is good, the time of death is also good, and the future life is also good. Thus, a bhikshu, diligent in the training of discipline, should be mindful in the third time. How should a bhikshu, diligent in the training of discipline, be mindful in this fourth time, starting from the practice of alms-seeking? Here, in whatever village or town a bhikshu dwells, he should practice everything as it is said in the Sutra of Pure Alms-seeking. Thus, a bhikshu, diligent in the training of discipline, should be mindful in the fourth time. How should a bhikshu, diligent in the training of discipline, be mindful in this fifth time, starting from immediate tasks? Here, a bhikshu should be mindful of the tasks related to the alms bowl, the tasks related to the Dharma robes, and the tasks of advising the wise who engage in the same practice of pure conduct, or any other immediate tasks, ensuring that they are not burned, do not rot, do not get lost, and do not...
