Virtue and impropriety, as well as the actions of body, speech, and mind, the breaking of vows, the breaking of views, the breaking of rituals, the breaking of livelihood, following the minds of others, following harming others, following places of disbelief, sexual activity, alms bowl, Dharma robes, alms, bedding, cushions, medicine and implements for the sick. Among these, non-virtue refers to anything that is inherently blameworthy. Among these, impropriety with virtue refers to anything that has prescribed faults. Among these, based on the actions of body, speech, and mind, all five categories of transgressions should be understood accordingly. Similarly, other things besides the basis of transgression should also be understood accordingly in relation to these five categories of transgressions. Among these, transgression, in short, is these five categories of transgressions. How do these five categories of transgressions arise? It is said that there are five ways: basis, motivation, object, action, and completion. The detailed explanation of these should be extensively explained from the Vinaya-matrika that gathers the basis. Furthermore, there are nine types of transgressions: the transgression of a layperson, the transgression of a laywoman, the transgression of a novice monk, the transgression of a novice nun, the transgression of a probationary nun, the transgression of a fully ordained nun, the transgression of a fully ordained monk, the transgression of an ordinary person, and the transgression of a trainee. There is no transgression for a non-trainee. Why is that? Because for them, there is nothing to be done, and merely through the merit obtained naturally, all subtle precepts have been cut off, and therefore it is impossible for afflictive transgressions to arise. Among these, the absence of transgression can be understood in four ways: a beginner, an insane person, a distracted person, and a suffering person. Among these, liberation from transgression can be understood in five ways: oneself, others, oneself and others, bodily transformation, and abandoning the body. Among these, oneself refers to actions that need to be restrained. Among these, from other aspects, it refers to seeing the truth.

Transgressions arise from non-afflictive sources. Regarding self and other, it is like this: the transgressions of ordinary beings arise from afflictive and non-afflictive sources. Regarding transformation of the body, it is like this: a bhikshu abandoning his body and transforming into the body of a bhikshuni, or a bhikshuni abandoning her body and transforming into the body of a bhikshu, or similarly, both the bhikshu and bhikshuni abandoning their bodies and transforming into a different gender, or transforming into no gender. Regarding abandoning the body, it is like this: at the time of death. The basis of pure discipline is these ten, namely: purity through knowledge, purity through result, purity through benefit, purity through externals, purity through internals, purity through all, purity through love and respect, purity through cultivating the antidote of overcoming, purity through cultivating the antidote of abandoning latent tendencies, and purity through uninterrupted continuity. Other categories include: purity through the basis of precepts, purity through completely abandoning the extreme of pursuing the enjoyment of desires, purity through completely abandoning the extreme of pursuing self-torment, purity of higher intention, purity of higher livelihood, purity through conformity to the Dharma and association, purity through absence of strife and contention, purity through subduing afflictions, purity through freedom from afflictions, and purity through correctly upholding the true Dharma. The faults of discipline are ten: the fault of breaking precepts, the fault of displeasure, the fault of separation from companions, the fault of aspirations, the fault of negligence, the fault of manifest pride, the fault of impure latent tendencies, the fault of impure intention, the fault of non-definiteness, and the fault of conduct. The virtues of discipline are ten: the very discipline of conformity, the very discipline of continuity, the very discipline of incomparability.
