The feelings that I possess, as well as the feelings that have desire and do not have desire, as well as the feelings that have form, as well as the feelings that have formlessness, as well as the four categories of feelings that have formlessness and do not have formlessness, should also be known as they are. Whatever are the merits of desire, those are also desires that have the fault of defects, and whatever are the desires that have the fault of defects, are those also the merits of desire? Answer: There are four categories. Some are the merits of desire, but are not desires that have the fault of defects, namely: form, sound, smell, taste, touch, whatever life that is not possessed of all afflictions and can be universally enjoyed, as well as strength, happiness, innocence, abiding in happiness, which in itself benefits pure conduct, and those that enter for the sake of the accumulation of the path and the increase of virtue. Some have the fault of defects, but are not the merits of desire, namely: form, sound, smell, taste, touch, whatever enters into the cause of the sole non-desire, non-agreeableness, non-joy, non-agreeableness, and whatever are the desires of affliction. Some both have the fault of defects and are the merits of desire, namely: form, sound, smell, taste, touch, whatever is not possessed of all afflictions and cannot be universally enjoyed, but becomes desire itself, agreeableness itself, joy itself, agreeableness itself. Some are neither the merits of desire nor the desires that have the fault of defects, namely: form, and the afflictions that have formlessness, and all bases. The Blessed One, from the merits of desire that have the fault of defects, revealed: 'Discrimination is desire-attachment, it is the desire of a man.' Thus it was declared. Those three cravings, if briefly summarized, should be observed as two types: the first is the craving for craving, and the second is the craving for enjoyment. Among them, the craving for enjoyment is craving itself, enjoyment obtained

and the distinction of places not yet attained. Those cravings also become threefold due to the classification of realms: craving for desire, craving for form, and existence in the formless realm. One born in the desire realm, desiring to manifest in those who engage in desire, the craving of those who have obtained enjoyment rejoicing, and those who have not obtained it not rejoicing, that is craving for desire. One born in the desire realm or the form realm, desiring to be free from desire for those who desire, desiring to manifest in those who engage in form, and rejoicing in having attained the samadhi of form, and the craving of rejoicing in obtaining other distinctions of samadhi, that is craving for form. Just as with craving for form, so too, craving for the formless should be understood accordingly. Furthermore, the craving for existence itself, relying on the view of permanence and annihilation, becomes craving for existence and craving for destruction. Therefore, craving is called that which pervades things. How does craving, when it arises, increase fifteen kinds of faults? Namely, it solidifies latent tendencies, completely entangles and defiles the mind and mental factors, causes the mind-stream to engage perversely with its object, draws in other afflictions gathered by clinging, maintains its own continuity, causes unarisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas to be in accordance with arising, causes arisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas to be in accordance with increasing and expanding, obstructs the arising of unarisen virtuous dharmas, obstructs the abiding, non-forgetting, recurring, and increasing and expanding of arisen virtuous dharmas, connects one with the suffering of the lower realms by engaging in all misconduct, and connects one with samsara, and also connects one with the suffering of birth, aging, and sickness due to desiring rebirth, and causes one to fear nirvana, and rejoices by perversely grasping samsara as virtue and benefit.
