Because of this. If one has not accumulated virtuous roots before, then not accumulating virtuous roots before and after is the same. Therefore, his later lives will become beings who tend towards complete nirvana, and it cannot be said that he will not change. The Hearers, in brief, are these ten. Which ten? Those with pure realms, those who have attained conditions, those born in realms of pervasive afflictions, those born in pure realms, those born in degenerate times, those born in good times, those who have not attained the eye, those who have attained the eye, those with pure eyes, and those with extremely pure eyes. Among these, the first is those who abide in lineage. The second is those who have entered the stream. Which world do the Hearers arise in, where they perceive many sufferings, and where there is the opportunity for the five degenerations to arise, from the dregs of life to the ultimate dregs of sentient beings? This is called being born in a realm of pervasive afflictions. Being born in a pure realm should be understood as the opposite of this. How should one view the Hearers who are born in degenerate times? The Hearers who are born in degenerate times mostly gather for gain and respect, do not incline towards the Dharma that truly satisfies, have much desire, hatred, ignorance, and non-virtuous Dharma, their minds are completely filled with jealousy and the near afflictions of miserliness, they are miserly with their dwellings, miserly with their homes, miserly with gain, miserly with praise, miserly with the Dharma, they are deceitful and deceptive, from giving and abandoning onwards, they renounce with the thought of seeking prosperity, not with the thought of nirvana, and they are agitated, arrogant, unstable, talkative, frivolous, have evil deceit, are forgetful, inattentive, their minds are distracted, their faculties are abandoned, they have many afflictions but do not completely cut off the arising of afflictions, they have much suffering and discomfort but do not generate renunciation, they gather in large groups, abandon remote dwellings and monasteries, come into the sangha, rely on and delight in beds and cushions near villages, like this.

Always delighting in speaking, always delighting in noisy talk, always delighting in clamor, extremely attached to self, heedless, not cultivating the body, not cultivating the mind, discipline, and wisdom. Abandoning those sutra teachings spoken by the Thus-Gone One that are profound, endowed with emptiness, and in accordance with dependent arising, they respectfully attend to those various letters that are the domain of poetry composed by poets, various words and syllables, and those endowed with worldly secret words, taking them up and generating supreme joy in them, regarding as Dharma those teachings that are fashioned like the holy Dharma, delighting in them, proclaiming and widely proclaiming them, slandering the Dharma and the Vinaya, regarding those who speak of the Dharma and the Vinaya as enemies, mostly being those whose discipline is corrupted, possessing sinful teachings, inwardly rotten, having become a source of faults, acting like blind men, claiming to be renunciates when they are not, claiming to be celibate when they are not, intentionally committing all heavy downfalls, and not purifying even the heavy ones completely, let alone the middling and light ones. Even if downfalls occur, they mostly do not restore them according to the Dharma, but pretend to do so for the sake of others' understanding, not doing so from the bottom of their hearts. They strongly maintain the houses of friends and the houses that give alms. They will strive to do many things that are the business of householders, and meaningless things related to the actions of householders. They show great affection, intimacy, respect, and loving-kindness especially to white-clothed householders, but they do not do so to those who practice celibacy. They mostly abide in the teachings that maintain livelihood through hypocrisy and wrong livelihood. They closely maintain a mind of mutual hatred, engaging in quarrels, fault-finding, disputes, and competition. They value many vessels and utensils, and merely superficial behavior. With these, they despise those who have gone forth and taken full ordination.
