What is attainment, acquisition, and possession? In short, being completely seized by the causes of arising and the seed being fully matured is called attainment. Therefore, in terms of categories, it should be understood that attainment is also an imputed existence. If attainment were substantially existent, would it be the cause of the arising of conditioned phenomena, or would it be the cause of becoming inseparable from the Dharma? If it were the cause of the arising of conditioned phenomena, then since the cause of its arising, attainment, does not exist before that Dharma is attained, it would never arise. In that case, it would never be attained. If it were the cause of becoming inseparable from the Dharma, then all virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral Dharmas would simultaneously possess attainment, and those incompatible things would also arise simultaneously. Therefore, neither of these two situations is reasonable. The cause of the arising of Dharmas is that each determined cause completely seizes its own seed. The cause of separation is that other conditions manifest and separate from other conditions. Among these, being able to accomplish the conditions is called attainment. Relying on this ability, the individual, the person, quickly accomplishes the conditions in order to generate whatever Dharma of arising and ceasing they wish to manifest. Therefore, this is also called attainment. Attainment can also be briefly summarized into three types: possessing seeds, possessing power, and possessing universal arising. Among these, those afflictive, neutral, and innate virtuous Dharmas that arise without seeking, their seeds have not been damaged by the decline of calm abiding, nor have they been completely destroyed by the noble path. The same is true for virtuous Dharmas, for example, those who have severed the roots of virtue, who have not been damaged by heretical views, this is called possessing seeds. That is, as long as its seed has not been damaged or completely destroyed, then it is associated with afflictive and other Dharmas that universally arise or do not universally arise.

Returning to the topic. Those virtuous dharmas that arise from manifest actions, and those that are not indicated, some of which are caused to arise, causing the seed of the cause to be fully ripened and fully possessed, are called powerful. The present dharmas, which are accomplished by their own nature through manifest objects, are called possessing complete arising. Among these, what is the life faculty? It is the definite duration of time that is drawn by karma, in which the body manifests and abides in this and that place, and is called life, vital force, and life faculty. It can also be divided into definite, indefinite, conforming, non-conforming, short-term, long-term, ultimate, non-ultimate, self-controlled, and non-self-controlled. Among these, except for the lives of the people of Jambudvīpa, the life in other places of birth is definite. Here (in Jambudvīpa), sometimes it is long, immeasurable; sometimes it is short. In places like Uttarakuru, just as their lifespans are determined individually, they always conform, because there is no time of death in the intermediate state, so it is conforming. Apart from that, all are non-conforming. In Jambudvīpa, the lifespan of people with a lifespan of ten years is short. Some animals are also the same, such as some animals whose lifespan appears to be one day, and some animals whose lifespan appears to be between two, three, and ten days. The lifespan of sentient beings born in the realm of non-perception and neither non-perception is long, as they can live for eighty thousand great kalpas. The lives of arhats, and those who completely pass into nirvana in this life, and all the existences of ordinary beings, are ultimate. Apart from that, it should be known as non-ultimate. Arhats, Tathagatas, and Bodhisattvas, who practice abandoning the activities of life and increasing life, have self-control over the life faculty. Apart from that, it should be known as non-self-controlled. Among these, what is homogeneity? In short,
