What are the phenomena that are not other than the aggregates, that are different in meaning from the aggregates? Although they do not abide in those, nevertheless, there is something that is without aggregates, that does not possess all the qualities of the aggregates, and that is conceived from the very existence of a self. These four modes are not above that, nor is there anything beyond that. The very existence of a self as a substance is not possible in any way. Why is that? If the self were merely the aggregates, then it would not be other than the aggregates. The self would merely be imputed upon the aggregates. If that were the case, then the aggregates are not impermanent and do not possess other characteristics of their own. Therefore, that is not reasonable. If the self were other than the aggregates, then it would be either impermanent or permanent. If it were impermanent, then in each moment, another self would arise and another would cease. Here, another would die and there, another would be born. Another would act and another would experience. If that were the case, then the arising of a self other than the aggregates or the cessation of a self other than the aggregates is not observed either internally or externally or in both. Therefore, that is not reasonable. If it were permanent, then the characteristic of permanence is this: whatever is unchanging. If that self is unchanging, then it cannot change for two reasons: it cannot change in the future life, and it cannot change in this very life. If the self is unchanging, then in the future life, it will not be born, will not age, will not die, and will not be harmed. Sometimes it is born as a god, sometimes as a human, sometimes as an animal, sometimes as a hungry ghost, and sometimes it is born as a hell being, which is also not possible. If it is unchanging, then in this life, it will not change to happiness with desirable and undesirable objects, nor will it change to suffering, nor will it be attached, nor will it be hateful, nor will it be deluded. In short, it will not be changed by happiness and suffering, and by any afflictions and near afflictions. If it is unchanging in that way, and it does not benefit from happiness in the future life and in this life, then the afflictions associated with it also closely afflict.

Nor will it be defiled by afflictions, and that basis will not practice Dharma and non-Dharma either. Even if it is not harmed by suffering, it will not be defiled by the afflictions associated with it, and that basis will not practice Dharma and non-Dharma either. Like this, if one does not possess Dharma and non-Dharma in this life, then in the next life, relying on what will it remain constant as such? Its respective self-nature body, arising from impermanent changes, transformed by birth, old age, sickness, death, etc. in the next life, the desire to recognize the body that is wanted and unwanted will not arise from a causeless origin. Therefore, this self-nature neither arises from its respective self-nature and body, nor does it have old age, sickness, death, happiness, and suffering, and even if there are afflictions, it will only attain permanent liberation, therefore this is also unreasonable. If someone thinks that in which things the self-nature is different from the aggregates, and which are the Dharma of the self-nature outside the aggregates, the self-nature exists in those things. Then, if those things that are different from the aggregates cannot be determined by their own characteristics, how can one think that the self-nature exists in those things? For example, it is like someone saying, "I saw a garland of sky flowers tied on the head of a barren woman's son." It should be understood like this, therefore this is also unreasonable. If the self-nature is in everything of everything, because it does not possess all the aggregates, it will become without aggregates. Since there are no aggregates, it is not form either. It does not possess a body, nor does it possess happiness and suffering. It does not possess many diverse names, nor does it possess virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified minds. Because it completely enjoys objects such as form, it does not possess mental discriminations either. In this way, the self-nature becomes without a body, without feeling, without a name, without a mind, and without discrimination. In this way, the self-nature is not completely defiled by afflictions, and the self-nature will easily attain liberation, therefore this is also unreasonable. Because like this, no matter in what way one examines the permanent self-nature, it is unreasonable, therefore, the self-nature is merely imputed on the aggregates.
