Or, it is not permissible to be non-existent, or completely identical or non-identical. Why is it that for things like form, smell, taste, and touch, which are each different, relying on things like food, drink, riding, clothing, and ornaments, which are each different, these which are named as a single aggregate, how should they be understood as being nominally existent? Like this, the names of these sometimes appear on the aggregate of names like form, and sometimes they disappear. On the aggregate of names like form, if the name of food appears, then the name of drink disappears; where the name of drink appears, the name of clothing disappears; and for the remaining things, one should understand similarly the appearance and disappearance of these names that are conventionally established. The names of form, smell, taste, and touch appear without distinction on all the objects of the names of food, drink, clothing, ornaments, etc. Therefore, food, drink, riding, clothing, ornaments, etc., are nominally existent, while form, smell, taste, and touch should be understood as substantially existent. For phenomena that are nominally existent, if we briefly summarize the various, numerous, and diverse names that rely on them, they should be understood as two types: relying on a single aggregate and relying on multiple aggregates. Relying on each of the different things like food, drink, riding, clothing, and ornaments is relying on a single aggregate. Relying on things like painting work, sculpting work, houses, palaces, armies, and forests is relying on multiple aggregates. So, what are the phenomena that have form? Briefly, they are the ten form sense-bases and the form that belongs to the dharma sense-base, because they possess the nature of form, so by closely applying designation to them, they are called phenomena that have form. The detailed classification of these phenomena that have form is established through five aspects: what are the five? Thing, own-characteristic, general-characteristic, element, and function. Among these, the thing of form, briefly, whatever is form, all of that is the four great elements, and that which has the four great elements as its cause.

It should be recognized that this is what is called "O." There is nothing higher than it, and nothing more excellent than it. The self-nature of form is threefold: pure form, pure graspable form, and mind-graspable form. Among these, the five pure forms that have the four great elements as their cause, belong to the sense bases such as the eye, and serve as the basis for the five consciousnesses, are called pure forms. The objects of these corresponding five pure forms, namely the five objects such as form, are called purely graspable forms. Among these, the pure forms that are associated with consciousness are called corresponding ones because they have the same objects as the consciousnesses. Those that are separated from consciousness are called similar to them because they gradually become similar to their own continuum. The form of the image in the realm of meditative absorption is called the form of the realm of mind. The general characteristics should also be recognized as threefold: all forms are under the suppression of objects, and they can always be separated from objects, which is called the first general characteristic. All pure forms and purely graspable forms that have increase and decrease are the second general characteristic. All those that can be touched by the touch of the hand, such as the body, stick, weapon, cold, warmth, hunger, thirst, flesh fly, mosquito, long-beaked insect, wind, sun, and the touch of a poisonous snake, should be recognized as the third general characteristic. Among these, the form of the desire and karma accomplished in the form realm of those who abide in meditative equipoise should be recognized as the form that is practiced in the form realm. The form of the desire and karma accomplished in the form realm of those who do not abide in meditative equipoise is called the form that is practiced in the desire realm. From the perspective of realms, the detailed classification of form is summarized as these two types. For those who practice in the formless realm, there is no form. Therefore, the general characteristic of form is as follows: whatever can be touched by the touch of the hand and the body, etc., its general characteristic is not universally present.
