Because one wishes to combine, it is appropriate to combine treatises with six reasons: thinking that it will increase the meaning of the Dharma; thinking that because sentient beings have various inclinations, some of them will enter through this; thinking that it is to distinguish between the decline and extreme decline of meaning; thinking that it is to collect scattered meanings; thinking that it is to clarify profound meanings; and thinking that it is to create beauty with beautiful words. If one wishes to combine treatises, one should combine treatises by combining oneself with four qualities: not being arrogant towards the previous teachers; having great compassion for sentient beings; having loving-kindness for those who are in accordance with the Dharma; and not proclaiming oneself. How is it not being arrogant? If the previous teachers also combined treatises, why shouldn't I do it? One does not combine treatises with such a mind, but combines treatises by abandoning the mind of pervasive affliction filled with arrogance. How is it having compassion for sentient beings? If treatises are not combined, one will see many classes of sentient beings, such as those who decline and completely decline from virtuous Dharmas, and other sentient beings who are threatened by the dangers that arise extensively, such as birth and old age, even if they understand the meaning of a single well-spoken word through the combination of treatises and practice it accordingly, that is for their long-term benefit, welfare, and happiness, and it is only with such thoughts that one combines treatises. How is it having loving-kindness for those who are in accordance with the Dharma? If treatises are not combined, one will see others who want to benefit those who are in accordance with the Dharma, such as those who decline and completely decline due to benefiting others, and it is only by generating loving-kindness for them that one combines treatises. How is it not proclaiming oneself? I am not as wise, clear, and upright as others,
