I. Abandoning the Dharma that has been correctly adopted, relying on what is not the true Dharma, and not fearing to not diligently act. The five aspects that are the opposite of this should be understood as the establishment of knowing shame and having embarrassment. Discomfort should also be understood as being established by five aspects: not practicing, practicing wrongly, not enduring, not fearing, and not guarding. The establishment of evil friends should also be understood by five aspects: being shameless, having wrong views, being lazy, engaging in wrong conduct, and being inferior. The five aspects that are the opposite of this should be understood as the establishment of comfort and virtuous friends. The establishment of calm abiding should also be understood by only five aspects: calm abiding gathered by worldly approximation, similarly gathered by the nature of the absorption of form, similarly gathered by the nature of the absorption of formlessness, gathered by the attention of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas who have transcended the world, and gathered by the attention of the Bodhisattvas who have transcended the world. The establishment of insight should also be understood by only five aspects: suchness of what exists, suchness of how it exists, arising from characteristics, arising from thorough search, and individual understanding. If the leak of desire is briefly summarized, it should be known to be established by five aspects: the latent tendencies arising from the objects of the body that are not equally placed, not conforming to virtue, conforming to misconduct, being overly attached to desire, and arising from the afflictions that are the fruit of the suffering of change, it should be known as the leak of desire. If the leak of existence is briefly summarized, it should be known to be established by five aspects: the afflictions that cause rebirth in a bad realm, becoming reborn in the realm of form, becoming reborn in a good realm, becoming reborn in existence unwillingly, and the afflictions that cause rebirth in existence willingly. If the leak of ignorance of those who wrongly desire liberation is briefly summarized, it should be known to be established by five aspects: perception.

What is the ignorance that enters through the gate of those who speak of sentient beings, who speak of consciousness; and those who speak of no consciousness; and those who speak of neither having nor not having consciousness; and those who speak of annihilation; and those who speak of passing into sorrow in this life, what is the ignorance that enters through these gates? Chapter Twenty-Two. The way to thoroughly distinguish dharmas can be known in five ways if summarized briefly: these are characteristics, essence, action, dharma, and cause and effect. Among these, characteristics are known from body, movement, and dwelling. Essence is known from its own characteristics and the characteristics of its distinctions. Action is known from doing its own activity, truly, and accomplishing falsely. Dharma is known from complete defilement, complete purification, conventional truth, and ultimate truth. Cause and effect are known from nearness, distance, desirability, and undesirability. There are three kinds of treatises: treatises that emphasize listening, treatises that emphasize debate, and treatises that emphasize practice. Among these, treatises that emphasize listening are like the secret words of the Brahmins. Treatises that emphasize debate are like the treatises of reasoning of the outsiders. Treatises that emphasize practice are like the words of the Buddha. Furthermore, there are three kinds of treatises: treatises without meaning, treatises with wrong meaning, and treatises with meaning. These should also be understood to be combined appropriately with the previous ones. Furthermore, there are three kinds of treatises: treatises of bad faith, treatises without essence, and treatises that definitely liberate from suffering. These should also be understood to be combined appropriately with the previous ones. Those who wish to closely associate with treatises should pay homage to two kinds of beings: having paid homage to them, one should begin to compose treatises, namely: the teachers who first composed treatises based on respect for the Dharma, and the teachers who explain its meaning based on respect for the meaning.
