The explanation of things should be understood through four causes: because it is the explanation of the non-Buddhists; because it is not in accordance with the Dharma; because it is meaningful; and because it is merely the basis for disputes. What is meaningless should be understood through two causes: because the cause and effect are contrary to thought; because defilement and purification are contrary to thought. What are the two extremes to be completely abandoned? In short, six aspects should be observed: completely abandoning the extreme of fabricating non-existent things; completely abandoning the extreme of slandering existent things; completely abandoning the extreme of clinging to permanence; completely abandoning the extreme of clinging to annihilation; completely abandoning the extreme of indulging in sensual pleasures; completely abandoning the extreme of self-mortification. The distinctions of these should be understood as they were previously shown in those places. So, what is inconceivable? In short, there are six inconceivables: thinking about the self; thinking about sentient beings; thinking about the world; thinking about the karmic ripening of sentient beings; the meditative realm of meditators; and the Buddha realm of the Buddhas. Among these, thinking about the self, thinking about sentient beings, and thinking about the world, if they rely on views, then they are inconceivable. If they do not rely on views, then they are not inconceivable. Among these, thinking about the self is like this: here, some people rely on the view of aggregates and think like this: Did I exist in the past? From there, it is the same in the three times. Similarly, am I with form? Is it mutually conscious? Similarly, is it without consciousness? Is it neither with consciousness nor without consciousness? Just as with form, so too with formlessness. In detail, it is like this: as it is said in the Brahma Net Sutra: those who speak of permanence, and those who speak of annihilation, and those who speak of attaining Nirvana in this life, and those who speculate on the end of the past.
