Because it is already born, it is not born. Cessation is also only because it is already born, so it will never be born. Thus, from what is already born, the mind is not born. It should be understood that with those seven causes, the mind is not born. The seven causes that are the opposite of this are as follows: Condition exists, attention exists, attainment exists, accordance exists, non-abandonment exists, non-cessation exists, non-birth exists. It should be understood that with these, there is birth. The determination of the aspects of the mind-endowed and mind-less grounds is complete. The remaining treatise on the determination of the aspects of these two grounds is non-existent. The determination of the aspects of the ground arising from hearing is that, the five places, the actions of the body are completely purified, the actions of speech are completely purified, the actions of mind are completely purified, having great compassion for sentient beings, and possessing the unsurpassed. Having assessed the suitability for refuge with these, one should take refuge. Among them, what should be taken refuge in? With what cause does one take refuge in them? With how much is refuge taken? After taking refuge, how should one practice? What are the benefits of taking refuge? The answer is, what should be taken refuge in are three, the Buddha and so on. With four causes, one should take refuge in them. The Tathagata is of an extremely gentle nature, skillful in taming those to be tamed in all ways, possessing great compassion, not pleased by offerings of all material things, but pleased by offerings of practice. Whatever Dharma is taught in that way, and whatever Sangha of his hearers is, it should also be understood that only in that way is it suitable for refuge. With four causes, refuge is taken: knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, promising, not speaking of others. It should be understood that the true practice of taking refuge is fourfold: relying well on noble individuals, listening to the sacred Dharma, attending to it properly, and practicing the Dharma that accords with the Dharma. It should be understood that true practice is fourfold: not letting the senses run wild, properly taking up the basis of training, mind

One should be compassionate to sentient beings and should always be diligent in offering to the Three Jewels. The benefits of taking refuge are four: obtaining great merit, obtaining great joy and supreme joy, obtaining samadhi, and obtaining purity. There are also four benefits: possessing great protection, all the obscurations of wrong views are weakened, obtaining complete exhaustion and complete attainment, being counted among the noble beings who have attained the holy fruit, those who practice like the teacher and Brahma, and the gods who have great faith in the teachings will be satisfied and happy, thinking: So-and-so possesses the merits of taking refuge, having died from there and been reborn here, also possesses those merits of taking refuge, and since he abides here many times, he will surely become our friend, they will be delighted and especially praise, especially praise. The differences between the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha Jewels should be understood in six ways: namely, nature, activity, faith, practice, remembrance, and increase of merit. Among them, the difference arising from nature is: the nature of the Buddha Jewel is to realize perfect enlightenment oneself; the nature of the Dharma Jewel is the fruit of realizing perfect enlightenment; the nature of the Sangha Jewel is to truly practice according to the instructions of others. Among them, the difference arising from activity is: the Buddha Jewel has the activity of well-spoken teachings; the Dharma Jewel has the activity aimed at abandoning afflictions and suffering; the Sangha Jewel has the activity of increasing joy. Among them, the difference arising from faith is: for the Buddha Jewel, one should focus on serving and offering with reverence; for the Dharma Jewel, one should focus on realization with reverence; for the Sangha Jewel, one should focus on associating with things that are in accordance with the Dharma with reverence. Among them, the difference arising from practice is: for the Buddha Jewel, one should practice by offering and respectfully serving.
