If asked: What are the limbs of samadhi? The answer is: There are five limbs. What are the five limbs? Namely: mindfulness, vigilance, equanimity, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. If asked: What are the limbs of the fourth dhyana? The answer is: There are four limbs. What are the four limbs? Namely: completely pure equanimity, completely pure mindfulness, neither suffering nor pleasure, and one-pointedness of mind. Among them, for the first dhyana, mindfulness, vigilance, equanimity, etc., are attained through the path of investigation and analysis, therefore, although they exist, they are not mentioned. For the second dhyana, although they are born from their own nature, they are entangled by the near affliction of mental joy, therefore, they are indicated by the name "inner complete purity." For the third dhyana, because it is free from the near affliction of the mind, it is indicated only by its own nature, therefore, the absence of joy, etc., is mentioned. Those that belong to the first dhyana are because they are free from the desire of craving, but not because they are free from joy. Those that belong to the second dhyana are because they are free from investigation and analysis, but not because they are free from joy. For the fourth dhyana, it is shown that those themselves are extremely pure. Therefore, for all the dhyanas, one should understand their order as it is, and it should be according to the circumstances. Why are these four dhyanas established as having five limbs and four limbs? The answer is: Because they are the basis of abiding, beneficial to abiding, and the nature of abiding. There are other reasons, namely: attending to the object of focus, thoroughly examining the object of focus, and not deviating from the object of focus. There are other reasons, namely: they are the basis of assistance, the basis of higher mind, and the basis of higher wisdom. There are other reasons, namely: they are the antidote to the three abidings of the near affliction of the unfavorable side. What are the three abidings of the near affliction of the unfavorable side? Namely: the abiding of affliction, the abiding of suffering, and the abiding of universal ignorance. There are other reasons, namely: the enjoyment of desires by the meditators.
