For a monk striving in tranquility, it should be known that there are five antidotes for abandoning the afflictions of proximity: completely abandoning the signs of darkness, properly applying oneself to the dharmas that are in accordance with the supremely delightful place that should be properly and completely grasped, destroying views with reason, the conduct of views, and the conduct of the place of views. When those afflictions of proximity are abandoned, it should be known that there are only five proximate samādhis. What are the five? Dwelling in extreme solitude and extreme solitude, talk that accomplishes samādhi, the requisites of life that are in accordance with a mind that is not entirely afflicted, being content to obtain advice and instructions that are in accordance with those skilled in practicing the same conduct as Brahma, and after completely abandoning the taste of worldly samādhis and attainments, properly attending to them in a manner that is without outflows. A monk striving in higher mind should individually seek out the arising of afflicted conceptualizations through three causes: completely abandoning the object, correctly refuting the essence, and completely abandoning the essence. Thereby, through three causes, the essence will be completely abandoned: for one with sharp faculties who possesses the power of an antidote, it is done in one instance. For one with middling faculties who does not possess the power of an antidote, it is done gradually from lifetime to lifetime. For one with dull faculties who does not possess the power of an antidote, it is done from the cause of conceptualization, which is primarily from correctly seeing faults in entanglement. The samādhi of three types of individuals should be known as three: the samādhi of one striving in higher mind has as its object the four types of sentient beings, namely those who harm, those who commit sins, those who do good, and those who benefit sentient beings. The samādhi of one striving to go to the ultimate has as its object the Dharma. The samādhi of one striving for realization has as its object only the Dharma. Through the three great ones, with the great samādhi, one will quickly, quickly realize Suchness, and having realized it,

Also, afflictions cease through great aims, great diligence, and great attention sustained by skillful means. Two kinds of solitude quickly realize Suchness: as a cause, solitude from busyness, and as a place, solitude from bad thoughts. There are five things that are incompatible with samadhi: not constantly engaging in transgressions, not engaging in respect, timidity, and the arising of all harm from others. There are three kinds of solitude: solitude of place, solitude of view, and solitude of hearing. For a monk who has entered into taming his mind, there are five faults of the heart that are incompatible with samadhi and that cut off samadhi: namely, anger, pride, desire for sensual pleasures, the view of the perishable aggregate, and impatience. From the heart, there are five signs of samadhi, because they abide as antidotes to those, therefore they are called faults of the heart. What are the five signs? Namely, being content with meager provisions, seeking what is virtuous, not looking to body and possessions, seeing faults and virtues in samsara and nirvana, and enduring the harm of practice. Among them, if one is angry and has thoughts of anger, if one does not obtain offerings in various households, or does not obtain what should be obtained, or obtains little or inferior offerings, or is prevented from obtaining them, or does not obtain them respectfully, then one will become angry and agitated because of that, and from that basis, one will repeatedly contemplate thoughts of harming and thoughts of injuring. One contemplates and examines them, and therefore one's samadhi, which has not arisen from the beginning, will arise, and that which has arisen will completely decline. Among them, if one is overcome by pride and has thoughts of pride, then one will naturally not generate respect for the dharmas, that is, for those who are worthy to be teachers, lamas, and objects of generosity, one will not constantly show respect with the body, nor respect with the mind, and one will completely [not do so] in order to seek what is virtuous.
