If the (four formless absorptions) arise, then the liberation of the sphere of nothingness and the liberation of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception will be accomplished. Because of the cause of accomplishing these, one will enter the liberation of cessation of perception and feeling, which is encompassed by the supreme abiding. From the sphere of infinite consciousness, because the aspects of infinity and immeasurability will manifestly be accomplished, therefore there is no establishment of cessation above that. The spheres of overcoming and the spheres of exhaustion are the path of purification for all liberations. The liberations are well distinguished by liberation from the obscurations of knowledge, and the minds of hearers and solitary realizers are liberated from whatever amount of obscurations of knowledge. In brief, entering into equipoise is to experience the taste of equipoise through three causes: arising from an absorption that has been attained is to experience the taste through correctly remembering purity, desire, suffering, joy, and agreeableness. For one who has not attained it, or for one who has attained it in the future, pursuing it by focusing on the experience of the taste itself is to experience the taste through manifest joy. For one who has attained it, it is to experience the taste through extensively enjoying purity, desire, suffering, joy, and agreeableness. Therefore, one experiences the taste of whatever one arises from, and one experiences the taste of whatever one enters into. The so-called experiencing the taste is whatever complete attachment and special craving there is for it. It should be known that the phenomena of a lower ground do not occur in one who has arisen in a higher ground. The phenomena of a higher ground do occur in one who has arisen in a lower ground and is free from desire. If one who has arisen in a lower ground is not free from desire and the mind is not equally abiding, then craving for the higher ground will arise, and that craving is also said to be acting in desire. This is also afflicted and non-afflicted. What is afflicted? If one thinks, 'Alas, I should enter into an absorption that possesses such great bliss, I should like this.'

And thinking of experiencing happiness again, if born in a higher realm, it will become constant, stable, and solid. Such craving that arises is said to be an affliction. If the mind is generated solely by a thought free from desire, and craving arises to accomplish higher realms of peace and excellence, then it should not be called an affliction. The abandonment of dharmas is of three types: abandonment by antidote, abandonment by pervasiveness, and abandonment by relinquishment. Among these, the first abandonment is the complete separation of the abode of afflictions. The second abandonment is the complete separation by generating and ceasing conditioned phenomena. The third abandonment is the complete separation by completely abandoning all conditioned phenomena of the lower realm, which leads to birth in a higher realm and complete liberation from samsara without the residue of aggregates. Complete degeneration is these three: complete degeneration from dharmas not yet attained, complete degeneration from dharmas already attained, and complete degeneration through constant practice. For the access concentration of worldly samadhis, what are the paths of application, immediate, and liberation? They are those that diligently practice for the sake of abandoning and realizing what, and contemplate their faults and peace, with the lower as faults and the higher as peace. What are the superior paths? It should be observed that they are aimed at both pervasiveness and the unconditioned. Among the six mental activities gathered by access concentration, from the recognition of individual characteristics and so on up to the ultimate path of application, which are they? Among them, the recognition of individual characteristics and the aspiration mental activity are gathered by the path of application. Extreme solitude and the ultimate path of application are both gathered by the immediate path. Gathering joy is gathered by all four paths. The contemplation mental activity is gathered solely by the superior path. Why is it said that the object of contemplation of the contemplatives of samadhi is inconceivable? Because however the contemplatives manifest conditioned phenomena, it is just like that.
