Afflictions should be observed as arising from the decline of higher mind and higher wisdom. Among them, lack of faith and laziness arise from the decline of both. Forgetfulness and distraction arise solely from the decline of higher mind. Wrong wisdom arises solely from the decline of higher wisdom. Regarding those who lack faith and are lazy, one should observe their laxity, busyness, not being the first to engage in what should be done, and abandoning diligence in solitary places. Regarding those who are forgetful, whose minds are distracted, and who have wrong wisdom, one should observe their lack of respect for the trainings, not observing the conduct of spiritual practice, and ordaining with the thought of making a living, rather than with the thought of liberation from suffering. It should be understood that the near afflictions of three types of individuals arise from three sources. Who are the three types of individuals? They are ordained practitioners within this Dharma, householders who enjoy sensual pleasures, and ordained practitioners who are outside of this Dharma. What are the near afflictions that arise from these three sources? The near afflictions of the first type of individual arise from carelessness. This has two aspects: based on oneself, one speaks untruths in order to gain robes and other possessions and respect, claiming to have attained superior human qualities; and based on others, one suppresses, harms, quarrels with, and belittles those who practice chastity and the wise through body and speech. The near afflictions of the second type of individual arise from excessive attachment to sensual pleasures. For example, due to excessive attachment to sensual pleasures, those who enjoy sensual pleasures engage in all kinds of misconduct with body, speech, and mind. The near afflictions of the third type of individual should be observed as arising from wrong practice. In brief, there are three aspects: associating with solitary places, associating with bustling places, and associating with trainings. Among them, what is associating with solitary places? It is when those outside of this Dharma go to solitary places in remote border areas.

Now, the five obscurations obscure the mind, and one dwells in suffering by experiencing the suffering of body and mind separately, and one abandons the antidote to afflictions by being separated from the five faculties such as faith. Thus, dwelling in afflictions, dwelling in suffering, and lacking the antidote to eliminate them, that is called the near affliction of extreme solitude. What is the near affliction associated with busyness? The anger and resentment of those who disagree with each other in views, arguing and clinging to their own and others' sects, and, broadly speaking, everything between hypocrisy and deceit, that is called the near affliction of busyness. What is the near affliction associated with discipline? Depending on oneself and others, constantly engaging in all improper actions, and due to shamelessness, everything between the decline of morality and the destruction of morality, that is called the near affliction associated with higher morality. With worldly samadhi, thinking that one is higher than those inferior to oneself, and feeling arrogant that one is greater than those equal to oneself, that is the near affliction associated with higher mental discipline. Having little learning and completely not practicing virtuous dharmas, that is the near affliction associated with higher wisdom discipline. If all these are summarized together, they are called practicing non-dharma and practicing badly. In terms of non-virtue, it is practicing non-dharma; in terms of unwanted results, it is practicing badly. A yogi who meditates on the ten exhaustion spheres accomplishes five activities. What are the five? From the earth exhaustion sphere and so on, up to the ultimate white exhaustion sphere, one accomplishes the manifestation body, the transformation of objects, and the miraculous powers of the noble ones. With the sphere of infinite space, one accomplishes the miraculous powers of the noble ones of coming and going. With the sphere of infinite consciousness, one accomplishes qualities such as freedom from afflictions, knowing as desired, and individually knowing things as they are. With the sphere of infinite consciousnes
