It is for the sake of fabrication and distinct establishment. If someone seizes a living being once, harms it, and kills it, separating it from its life, should this be called one action or two? It is said: It should be called two actions. The reason why these two actions seem like one is merely because they occur quickly, so a conceited illusion arises. The thought of "seizing this and taking its life" is one thought, occurring at the time of taking life; the thought of "harming this and killing it" is a second thought. Because when seizing it, one does not harm it; and when harming it, one does not seize it. Merely because they occur quickly, a conceited illusion of simultaneous occurrence arises, therefore it should be called two actions. In short, the karma to be experienced in this life can be understood by three causes. What are the three? The field is vast, the mind is vast, and the mind-stream is completely pure. Among these, the vastness of the field can be viewed in five ways: arising from the superior intention of being extremely beneficial to sentient beings, such as arising from the samadhi of loving-kindness; arising from abiding in the mind that extremely protects sentient beings, such as arising from the samadhi without afflictions; arising from the abode of the noble ones, which is extremely peaceful and similar to nirvana, such as arising from the cessation samadhi; obtaining the vows of not committing all non-virtues, such as the mind-stream of a stream-enterer being extremely pure; and the most ultimate is the sangha of monks, such as arhats and pratyekabuddhas. Thus, that is the vastness of the field. If one serves them from the depths of one's heart with devout mind, and offers suitable objects, then this should be regarded as the vastness of mind. If in previous other lives, for those others who started offering robes and other things to the same basis, he did not create obstacles or hinderances with body, speech, or mind, and did not generate an afflicted mind.

If the obscuration arising from thought and practice does not obscure the mind-stream, then one should regard that mind-stream as being completely pure. If all three causes are present in that, then it is certain that its karma will be experienced in this lifetime. Some are experienced after birth, and some are experienced at other times. Conversely, one should know that non-virtue arising from the three causes will also be experienced in this lifetime. There are also karmas that arise in a single instant and are experienced only in this lifetime. Some are experienced in this lifetime, and some are experienced after birth. Some can be transformed in all three ways. For example, a thread can only string one flower; it can only string one flower and cannot string more than that, like a short thread. Also, there are threads that can string two flowers. Also, there are threads that can string many flowers. For example, a small stream of water flows down and reaches its end in one step. The second, larger stream reaches its end in two steps. The third, large stream flows down and reaches its end after many steps. For example, a drop of salt water, whose nature has only a slight salty taste, can only make one drop of water salty, but cannot make more than that. The second, more concentrated drop of salt water can only make two drops of water salty, but cannot make more than that. The third, very concentrated drop of salt water can even make many drops of water salty. In the same way, one should understand karma in this way as well. These ten paths of non-virtuous actions are only associated with desire, and their ripening is also only in the desire realm, mostly in the lower realms, and rarely in the happy realms. One who has entered the stream has abandoned the lower realms. The desire of ordinary worldly beings

Those who have abandoned afflictions and are born in higher realms have conquered everything, but have not completely abandoned it. Those who do not return, whether they dwell here or are born there, and all Arhats, have completely abandoned everything. Bodhisattvas who possess superior intentions and abide in pure lands have also completely abandoned everything, because they have generated the power to endure the world, not because they have abandoned afflictions. Therefore, intention is karma, but not a path of karma. Actions such as killing, up to and including frivolous speech, are both karma and a path of karma. Covetousness, malice, and wrong views are only paths of karma, and should be regarded as not being karma. There is no treatise more excellent than this one, which elaborates on the aspects of the paths of karma. In summary: nature, collection and classification, method, weight and lightness, beginning, middle and combination, and the certainty of the arising of results. Regarding what is said about "the all-pervasive afflictions of rebirth," if rebirth is briefly summarized, it should be understood as eleven types: one is purely happiness, such as being born in certain heavens. Two is purely suffering, such as being born among hell beings. Three is both happiness and suffering, such as being born among gods, humans, animals, and certain hungry ghosts. Four is rebirth that is neither suffering nor happiness, such as being born in certain heavens. Five is completely impure rebirth, such as that of ordinary beings in the desire realm. Six is completely pure rebirth, such as that of Bodhisattvas who have attained mastery. Seven is rebirth that is both impure and pure, such as that of ordinary beings in the form and formless realms. Eight is rebirth that is impure, but possesses pure birthplaces, such as those in the desire realm who possess the Dharma of complete cessation and are born slowly. Nine is rebirth that is pure, but possesses impure birthplaces, such as ordinary beings born in the form and formless realms. Ten is rebirth that is impure, and the birthplace is also impure.
