Regarding actions arising from attachment, aversion, and ignorance, if someone asks, what are the distinctions among killing and other actions arising from attachment, aversion, and ignorance? If one kills because of wanting meat and so forth, this should be stated as killing arising from attachment. If one thinks, 'Having killed, I will seize the possessions that are there,' possessing such a mind, or if others give a reward, or wanting to repay a favor in return, or thinking that one will be completely accepted by friends, or having appropriated the food and clothing of a lord, and killing by his word, this also should be stated as killing arising from attachment. If one thinks, 'This will help me to attain what I have not attained,' or thinking, 'This will obstruct my attainment of what I have attained,' and therefore kills, and just as with what is not attained and what is attained, so too with what is unpleasant and pleasant, blame and praise, suffering and happiness, one should also observe accordingly; all of these should be regarded as killing arising from attachment. If one thinks, 'This one intends to harm me,' and therefore kills, this should be stated as killing arising from aversion. If one remembers someone who has harmed oneself, or suspects that (someone) will harm oneself, or sees (someone) harming oneself, similarly, one should understand extensively with regard to all nine objects of tormenting thought, as before; all of these should be stated as killing arising from aversion. If one kills for the sake of dharma, thinking, 'This (animal) and I are living beings, and others also rejoice in this, therefore, on that basis, having destroyed the body, one will be born in the world of the gods,' and therefore kills, this should be stated as killing arising from ignorance. If (someone) thinks, 'Killing for the sake of the lamas is well in accordance with the Dharma,' killing with such a mind, or if (someone) disregards the Vedas, Brahma, and the Lord of Beings, and

If one thinks that beating or killing maids, etc., is in accordance with the Dharma, killing with such a mind should also be called killing born of ignorance. If one teaches others that killing and accumulating karma of killing have no fruition, and makes others believe that killing is right, thereby killing, then making others believe that killing is right should also be called killing born of ignorance. As shown above, killing born of ignorance, for all other evil paths of action that take wrong views as ultimate, should be viewed in the same way. If parents, friends, or relatives are burned, starved, saddened, or pushed off cliffs, etc., and one thinks that doing so will transform into Dharma, thereby killing, this should also be called killing born of ignorance. If one covets the wealth of others with greed and steals it, this should be called taking what is not given, born of attachment. If others give rewards and steal, or in order to completely control others by bestowing favors, or expecting future benefits, or occupying the food and clothing of the ruler, and listening to his commands, or in order to obtain fame, praise, or happiness, all of these should be called taking what is not given, born of attachment. If one thinks, "This person wants to harm me," thereby being extensively dominated by the nine objects of torment, and steals, then for these things, there is neither indispensable greed nor indispensable pursuit, therefore, this action should be called taking what is not given, born of hatred. If one burns villages, houses, shops, or utensils and implements out of hatred for others, this is similar to taking what is not given, born of hatred, or one will be touched by even more serious transgressions. If one steals the property of others out of extreme hatred for others

Furthermore, if others spread rumors, and they also seize with those words, this should be said to be unrighteous taking arising from hatred. If one seizes with such a mind, that is, seizes for the sake of the lamas, thinking that it will become Dharma, this should be said to be unrighteous taking arising from ignorance. If one seizes with such a mind, that is, seizes because of reviling the Vedas, Brahma, and the Lord of Creatures, and because of scolding the Brahmins, thinking that it will become Dharma, this should be said to be unrighteous taking arising from ignorance. If one seizes with such a mind, that is, seizes the materials for sacrifice and the implements for sacrifice for the sake of offering sacrifice, thinking that it will become Dharma, this should be said to be unrighteous taking arising from ignorance. If, having seen, heard, or fully examined, one is completely bound by attachment by grasping improper signs, and having become completely bound, enters a place where one should not enter, this should be said to be sexual misconduct arising from attachment. If, having given a bribe, one uses others as intermediaries, and even if one enters a place where one should not enter through that union, one will be touched by the transgression of sexual misconduct arising from attachment. If one wants to be fully accepted as a friend, or wants to repay a favor, or having possessed the food and clothing of a lord, because of his words, or because of the hope of obtaining livelihood, wealth, grain, conch shells, gold, etc. from him, one engages in sexual misconduct, this should be said to be sexual misconduct arising from attachment. If one thinks, "This one wants to harm me," and from there, extensively relying on the nine objects of complete torment, one commits adultery, and although there is no complete binding of desire and attachment from the beginning, nevertheless, because this basis is only incompatible for him
