Does not possess any precepts, does not observe the Uposatha on the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days of the half-month, does not give alms from time to time, does not perform meritorious deeds, does not speak openly, does not prostrate, does not rise, does not join palms and show reverence, does not have a sense of shame and embarrassment from time to time, does not obtain great remorse, does not touch detachment from worldly desires, and does not touch the realization of the Dharma. It should be said that it is heavier than killing without an antidote. If one follows the views of those ascetics and Brahmins who perform incorrect offerings, and kills out of greed for the Dharma, it should be said that it is heavier than being attached to incorrect killing. If one thinks in one's mind, 'There is no fault in slaughtering livestock, because these livestock are transformed by the Lord of Beings for the sake of resources,' even if one thinks this way, it should be said that killing is heavy. Therefore, if one kills based on any wrong view, it should be said that it is heavier than being attached to incorrect killing. If one kills a large-bodied being born in the animal realm, it should be said that killing is heavier than the root. If one kills a human being or one who has entered the womb, or parents, siblings, someone like a teacher, or a beloved one, or a teacher, or a Bodhisattva, or an Arhat, or a Pratyekabuddha, if the Tathagata knows that the parents have been killed, if one harms the Tathagata with the intention to kill, or causes the Tathagata to bleed with the mind, it should be said that it is heavier than the root of killing. The opposite of the reasons stated above, it should be said that killing is light. From here onwards, the distinctions of heaviness and lightness of the root of taking what is not given, etc., will be explained, and the remainder should be observed appropriately, like killing. If one steals many things, then

It should be said that taking what is not given is heavier than the root. If one deceives and plunders a good person or someone trustworthy? If one plunders from the inferior and the miserly? If one plunders from a renunciate and the master of this Dharma? If one plunders things in a village? If one plunders from a student, or from an Arhat, or from a Pratyekabuddha, or from the Sangha, or from a stupa, it should also be said that taking what is not given is heavier than the root. Starting from what should not be entered, if one commits adultery with one's mother? Is one related to one's mother? With the wife loved by a man? If one commits adultery with a Bhikshuni who abides in asceticism, as well as a Shikshamana, and a Shramanerika, it should also be said that sexual misconduct is heavier than the root. Starting from a non-limb place, if one engages in sexual intercourse through the mouth, it should be said that sexual misconduct is heavier than the root. Starting from a non-time, if one commits adultery with someone abiding in Uposatha, or on a full moon, or afflicted by illness, it should be said that sexual misconduct is heavier than the root. Starting from a non-place, if one commits adultery at a stupa, or near a stupa, or in a Sangha's monastery, it should be said that sexual misconduct is heavier than the root. If one wants to deceive and delude others, and speaks false words with many reasons, it should be said that lying is heavier than the root. If one lies to a good person or an extremely excellent person, or to a loved one, or to one's mother, or to one's father, as previously explained in detail, even up to the Tathagata, it should be said that lying is heavier than the root. Furthermore, lying can also lead others to take life, it can also lead to the decline of enjoyment, and it can also lead to the plundering of one's wife. Therefore, if lying generates the heavy sin of taking life, as well as the heavy sin of taking what is not given, and the heavy sin of sexual misconduct, it should also be said that lying is heavier than the root.

If one lies in order to divide the Sangha, then that lie should be said to be the heaviest of all lies. If one instigates discord in order to separate those who have been friends for a long time, then that instigation should be said to be heavier than the root instigation. If one separates a spiritual friend, or a mother and son, or a father and son, or if one divides the Sangha, the instigation that arises from killing, taking what is not given, and engaging in sexual misconduct should be understood in the same way as before. Speaking harsh words to parents and so forth, and to teachers and the like, then that harsh speech should be said to be heavier than the root harsh speech. Speaking untrue lies, and lies that are not as they are, and directly scolding, and rebuking, and saying the eight precepts, should also be said to be heavier harsh speech. The words that become lying and so forth, whichever they are, their heaviness and lightness should also be like this, to be observed according to their circumstances. Idle talk that relies on fighting, exposing faults, arguing, and debating is also heavy. Quoting scriptures of outsiders that do not accord with the meaning with a mind of attachment, and explaining them, and widely and correctly showing them to others, then that idle talk should be said to be heavier than the root idle talk. To parents, relatives, teachers, and the like, showing contempt, mocking, being unreasonable, and constantly nagging, then that idle talk should be said to be heavier than the root idle talk. Generating greed for the property of the Sangha and stupas, then that greed should be said to be heavier than the root greed. The pride that arises from one's own qualities, and the desire for the gain of knowledge and respect for kings and so forth, and those who practice like Brahma, then that greed should also be said to be heavier than the root greed. Generating a mind of torment from all sides towards parents, relatives, teachers, and the like, then that harmful mind should be said to be heavier than the root harmful mind. Towards the innocent, and the stingy, and the suffering
