arising from, and without fault. There are three causes for generating faults: generating afflictions, generating suffering, and completely fulfilling desires. For the first, it should be observed that all three causes are present. For the second, there are two: desire is not completely fulfilled. For the third, there is only one: only generating suffering. The complete characteristics of the nature of covetousness, malice, and wrong views should be observed as being established in five ways. What are the five? Namely: having a mind that is particularly attached to one's own possessions; having a mind of greed and attachment, desiring possessions and so on; having a mind of miserliness, completely discriminating and savoring the goodness of others' wealth and utensils; having a mind of stinginess, manifestly fabricating the thought that what belongs to others should become one's own; and having a mind of being overwhelmed, being completely entangled by covetousness, and therefore not feeling ashamed and not knowing that it will necessarily arise from faults. Among these, if one only has a mind that is particularly attached to one's own possessions, and no other thoughts appear, then the evil deeds committed by that mind should not be regarded as the complete characteristic of covetousness. Similarly, although one has a mind that is particularly attached and also has a mind of greed and attachment, if no other thoughts appear, then it is not the complete characteristic of covetousness. Similarly, for the various aspects that have been extensively explained as before, if any one aspect is missing, it should not be regarded as the complete characteristic of covetousness. If all the limbs are completely present, then it is the complete characteristic of covetousness. Furthermore, the complete characteristic of the nature of malice should also be observed as being established in only five ways. What are the five? Namely: having a mind of hatred, clinging to the characteristics of the Dharma that are in accordance with the cause of harm; having a mind of intolerance, being unable to endure causing harm; again and again, according to the proper way

Having a resentful mind because of recalling unpleasant things; having a mind filled with hatred by extensively manifesting the thought, "If only I could beat or kill these beings!"; and like the previous one, having a contemptuous mind. If any one of these five aspects is missing, it is not a complete characteristic of harmful intent; if they are all present, then it should be regarded as complete. Similarly, the complete characteristic of wrong view should also be observed as being established by only five aspects. What are the five? Because of not fully knowing the correct objects of knowledge as they are, having a mind of ignorance; because of delighting in sinful actions, having a violent mind; because of conceptually and definitively thinking about what is not the proper Dharma, having a mind that enters into a wrong continuum; because of denying that generosity, offerings, fire offerings, and good conduct, etc., do not exist, having a mind of greatly diminished distinction; and being bound by the entanglement of wrong views, having no shame, and not knowing the inevitable arising of faults, having a contemptuous mind. If any one of these five aspects is missing, it is not a complete characteristic of wrong view; if they are all present, then it should be regarded as complete. Furthermore, if one kills a living being with one's hand, it should be said to be killing. If one kills with a stick, clod, weapon, or rope, or puts them in prison, or deprives them of food, or shoots them, harms them, beats them, or even with secret mantras (mantra, Sanskrit: मंत्र, Roman transliteration: mantra, literal meaning: incantation), medicines, executioners or agents, corpses and corpse-makers, etc., it should be said to be killing. If one kills out of desire for wealth and so on, it should be said to be killing. If one kills out of fear of being harmed, or wanting to eat meat, or desiring Dharma, or even for pleasure and amusement, it should be said to be killing. Whether one kills oneself or has others kill, if one kills, it should be said that one has committed the act of killing. Now, if one openly steals the property of others, it should be said to be taking what is not given. Whether one steals secretly, or breaks into a house, or unties a knot.
