Now, it should also be understood as it is stated in the sutras. For the benefit of this life, one should begin by possessing wealth, and be able to practice, possess complete protection, be able to live harmoniously, and be skilled in worldly crafts and occupations. One should be without deceit and trickery, and not have the behavior of enticing others. One should also have a sense of shame for all things that should not be done. Because one values and protects these behaviors, one's conduct is very complete. One does not deceive others regarding property entrusted in confidence. One does not abandon debts owed to others. One does not deceive regarding equal shares. One does not deceive with deception those who are ignorant about precious jewels or anything mentioned below precious jewels, down to a karṣāpaṇa. Similarly, one borrows worldly terms to benefit the world. If others entrust those tasks, one becomes a friend, does not change, and does not send words to the wind. One possesses good results of actions and does not possess bad results of actions. Even if one becomes a king, one acts according to the Dharma, not in an unlawful way, and does not delight in punishing with penalties. One turns the general populace away from dissolute discipline and leads them correctly into discipline. Similarly, one possesses the eight designations of the noble ones, that is, one says "I have seen" when seeing, and one says "I have understood" regarding what is heard, distinguished, and known. One does not say "I have seen" what has not been seen, and one says "I have not understood" regarding what has not been heard, distinguished, or known. A Bodhisattva who possesses these and similar qualities of Dharma knows completely and accurately how to understand the world and how to abide in the world. Therefore, he is called "knower of the world." How then does a Bodhisattva connect with the four pronouncements? Here, a Bodhisattva listens to the Dharma from others for the sake of meaning, not because he wants to arrange the words well, but he listens to the Dharma for the sake of meaning.

Not for the sake of words and phrases, even if the Dharma is taught in common language, Bodhisattvas should listen respectfully, valuing the meaning. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas should truly understand the black and white qualities. Having understood, they should rely on reason, not on individuals, such as not relying on elders, or wise persons, or the Tathagata, or the Sangha, because they expound these teachings. Thus, one should rely on reason, not on individuals, which means not deviating from that true meaning, nor relying on others in regard to all Dharmas. Moreover, Bodhisattvas should have faith and joy in the Tathagata, delighting in their teachings with a single-minded determination, and should rely on the definitive meaning Sutras of the Tathagata, not on the provisional meaning Sutras. If one relies on the definitive meaning Sutras, one will not stray from this true Dharma, as the provisional meaning Sutras, due to their numerous entrances and uncertain meanings, cause doubt. If Bodhisattvas have no certainty even in the definitive meaning Sutras, then they will also stray from this true Dharma. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas should regard the wisdom of realization as the essence, not merely understanding the Dharma and meaning through hearing and thinking. Knowing that what should be known through the wisdom of practice cannot be known merely by understanding the meaning through hearing and thinking, even if they hear the extremely profound teachings spoken by the Tathagata, they should not abandon them, nor should they slander them. Thus, Bodhisattvas should cultivate these four reliances. In this way, one enters well. In summary, these four reliances are the display of four valid cognitions, namely, the meaning of the teachings, reason, the teacher, and the wisdom of realization arising from practice. Through all these four reliances, Bodhisattvas are definitely and clearly shown to be without error in engaging in diligent effort. This is the Bodhisattva's Bodhisattva vows.
